Our weekly review of SEC football starts with Florida's fall

October is here. Let's look at Week 5 in SEC football before turning our attention to Week 6. What stories stand out the most?

1 - Florida fall is hardly a shocker

Was Florida really a top-10 team after beating Ole Miss? No. The Gators were in a good spot, getting Ole Miss at home one week after the Rebels played their very emotionally draining game against LSU. This past weekend, the dynamics were flipped. Florida had to go on the road to walk into a hornet's nest in Columbia, one week after its win over Ole Miss. This is the reality of SEC football: Playing and winning an emotional game one week doesn't mean a team will handle the next week well. The proven teams in the SEC stack wins. Going week to week is not the way to evaluate this conference. Let's see what Florida does over the next month before seeing how good the Gators really are.

2 - Shane Beamer is toast

Related stories

The Gamecocks keep digging a bigger and bigger hole. Shane Beamer lost another big lead. There doesn't seem to be any lingering reason to think Beamer is or can be the answer for South Carolina football. When the same bad patterns repeat over and over again, and the same bad habits persist without being stopped and handled, what is a school administration supposed to do? This marriage has run its course. It's over. It's time for a divorce in the Palmetto State.

3 - Arkansas' problem is not a coaching problem - look at Auburn

People can say Ryan Silverfield is the problem at Arkansas, and there's plenty of reason for that claim. However, look at what Alex Golesh is doing at Auburn. He was supposed to have a good quarterback. He was supposed to have a good offense. He was supposed to have been the coach Arkansas claimed in the carousel last fall. He was supposed to have been an upgrade over Silverfield. None of those things have panned out. You can criticize Silverfield, and that's entirely fair, but there were plenty of people who were mad Arkansas didn't get Alex Golesh. Those people can't say Golesh is proving himself in the SEC. It really does make Arkansas' problem more of an AD problem than a coaching issue.

4 - Alabama can score

Kalen DeBoer might not have a good defense or a great team, but his offense is posting big numbers on a regular basis. Keelon Russell is an electric talent. DeBoer hasn't lost his ability to coach offense and develop quarterbacks.

5 - Mississippi State's bubble gets popped

Mississippi State handled Minnesota and Missouri, but Alabama was a different animal. The ceiling for the Bulldogs is lower than previously perceived.
