Arkansas still has a better basketball roster than Kentucky, but the gap has been reduced

Arkansas basketball still has a better roster than the Kentucky Wildcats do, but after Milan Momcilovic transferred to Lexington, the gap between the two programs has shrunk to a considerable degree.

College basketball analysts widely agree -- if it's not unanimous, it's still pervasive -- that Milan Momcilovic fits Mark Pope's offensive system at Kentucky, giving the Wildcats something the rest of their roster largely lacked. It's an important puzzle piece which enables Pope to rescue his offseason. We shouldn't engage in revisionist history and claim this was a spectacular offseason in Bluegrass Country -- it wasn't -- but Kentucky did scramble to salvage the offseason and prevent it from being an absolute disaster.

It's always going to be interesting -- and worthwhile -- to compare Kentucky to Arkansas because UK got tired of John Calipari and fans pushed him out. Calipari has clearly exceeded Pope and Kentucky in the first two seasons after Cal left UK. One month ago, it seemed entirely possible that Kentucky would drift into outright irrelevance this coming season. Now, Arkansas is still better positioned than UK for a deep run in March, but the Wildcats have gone from being a nowhere team to a group which could very realistically finish in the top five of the SEC.

The conference is still Florida's to lose -- that hasn't changed, given how much roster retention the Gators were able to achieve -- but Kentucky is now within shouting distance of Arkansas and Texas, the two SEC teams largely regarded as the main contenders to Florida this upcoming season.

The other roster development story which has helped Kentucky close the gap with Arkansas in the offseason was the return of unpolished but promising center Malachi Moreno. Mark Pope combined that with the Momcilovic transfer portal pickup to piece together a more balanced roster than what he had going into May of 2026.

What is interesting about Kentucky and Arkansas beyond the Calipari-Pope angle is that both rosters for 2026-2027 have a lack of depth at center. Arkansas has Cooper Bowser but can use another defense-first big to give Calipari options. Kentucky doesn't have any low-post hammer other than the talented but largely unproven Moreno. How Calipari and Pope work around their lack of frontcourt depth instantly becomes a main talking point and central challenge for the coming season. It will be fascinating to see how UA's and UK's coaches maneuver around the roster limitations they face.
