Roster changes dominate the headlines for Arkansas football this week

There is plenty of roster news to update you on for Arkansas football. Ryan Silverfield added a few 2027 recruits over the past few days. On3 Sports has details:

"Arkansas coach Ryan Silverfield reeled in his latest commit in the class of 2027 on Monday, as tight end George VanSandt announced his pledge to the Razorbacks. VanSandt, who stands 6-foot-5 and weighs 235 pounds, made his decision public with a post on his X account.

"Arkansas extended the offer to VanSandt, a Portland, Oregon, native on April 9. The Hogs joined the likes of Washington State, San Diego State, Tulane and others. VanSandt is the fifth commit in the class of 2027 for the Razorbacks and the first tight end in the fold."

Arkansas and Ryan Silverfield weren't done.

"The Arkansas 2027 class got its second commitment on Monday from LaGrange (Ga.) defensive back Zy’Corius Huzzie. Huzzie picked Arkansas over offers from Appalachian State, Florida Atlantic, South Florida, Troy and FIU, among others.

"The 6-foot-1, 175-pound Huzzie joins Sheridan offensive lineman Bradley Sturdivant in the class. Gaither (Fla.) quarterback Joaquin Kavouklis was initially committed, but rescinded his pledge back in January."

Ryan Silverfield is trying to build depth within his program, so the fact that he has brought aboard several recruits and is beginning to create some volume in his 2027 recruiting class is encouraging. However, enthusiasm and optimism should be tempered by the sobering reality that Arkansas was not competing with the big fish of the SEC, Big Ten, ACC, or Big 12 in these recruitments. You can review the schools: Washington State, San Diego State, Tulane, App State, Florida Atlantic, South Florida, Troy, FIU. Is Arkansas getting the premium players who can get at it with the big boys of the SEC on fall Saturdays?

One can make the reasonable argument that Ryan Silverfield can't afford to be too picky, and it's true that what matters most is making the right evaluation and then developing a lower-ranked recruit into a quality SEC player. If Silverfield can handle those parts of his job description, all is well ... but it's a gamble to load up on smaller-profile recruits and not land the large prizes in the recruiting class. Stay tuned.

Meanwhile, Arkansas is losing a 2026 player from the roster. Receiver Jalen Brown, who played five games last season before suffering a season-ending injury against Notre Dame, got arrested and was dismissed from the program. Brown transferred from Florida State, where he had previously got entangled in off-field problems.
