John Calipari has to nail his transfer portal evaluations and acquisitions.

The college basketball season concludes Monday night with the national championship game at the 2026 Final Four in Indianapolis. For every other team and coaching staff, however, the offseason has already begun and the new transfer portal window is the big point of focus. Arkansas basketball and coach John Calipari have to make a splash. They have elite high school guards coming in, but the Hogs -- it is widely agreed upon -- need a low-post force who won't need to be coached from ground zero. Arkansas needs a ready-to-play big man for next season. With Karter Knox leaving for the portal, a roster spot is open, giving Calipari more options in terms of filling out the lineup for November. Sports Illustrated has more on the emerging speculation in the wake of Knox's departure:

"If the current roster stays the same, Arkansas will likely target one big man in the portal to stabilize its frontcourt. While (Flory) Bidunga played extensive minutes at Kansas this season, his presence in the transfer portal likely hinges on what happens at the combine. Should he receive a fair grade, his college career is likely over, but it's more likely he stays at Kansas with coach Bill Self rather than go elsewhere.

"This leaves Arkansas with its most likely option, signing (Somto) Cyril two years after Calipari lost him to Georgia when he left Kentucky following the 2023-24 season. Cyril has the body of an elite big man, but has been plagued with foul trouble issues as he fouled out of six games as a sophomore and had at least three fouls in 19 games. He averaged nearly 11 points, six rebounds, and three blocks in 22 minutes per game.

"Calipari's system values players who understand how to defend without fouling, especially in the paint. While Cyril could bring a hefty price tag for his services, he will have to buy into what's required to stay on the court at Arkansas because they can't afford to whiff again on a stronger interior presence."

Would Somto Cyril be enough of an answer in the frontcourt? Is he a solution Arkansas fans would be excited about? That would seem to be less than the big splash the Razorbacks need, but more players are going to enter the portal. The Hogs and Calipari just need to do their evaluations and drill deep for a player who can give this team what it acutely requires. Transfer portal madness isn't March Madness, but it's mad enough. Now Arkansas has to do something more than get mad; it needs to get even and elevate its roster to a championship level.
