The Arkansas cornerback is viewed as a late bloomer by one NFL draft analyst.
Arkansas cornerback Julian Neal is not expected to be picked early in the 2026 NFL draft. The general consensus is that Neal will go on Day 3, probably in the fifth or sixth round. The real question becomes, "Can Neal develop his game in ways which will enable him to transcend his currently perceived draft value?" NFL.com offered this analysis of the Razorback pro prospect:
"Neal is a late-blooming, fifth-year cornerback with the size, length and strength NFL teams desire for a press corner. His technique is in need of more work before he’s game-ready. A more physical approach at press would be beneficial in controlling the release. He has average long speed but that won’t matter as much in deep-zone coverages, where his length can take over. His talent as a run defender and tackler will benefit him in short-zone coverage. Neal’s traits raise his ceiling, but fit and technical improvement will be essential for him to become a factor.
Strengths
- Outstanding size, length, strength and explosiveness.
- Like a weighted blanket on the wideout when he’s in tight.
- Long arms shade and overwhelm the catch-point when he’s in position.
- Uses size and physicality to run through receivers and jar throws loose.
- Very sticky as an open-field tackler after the catch.
- Plays with above-average toughness in run support.
- Able to shed perimeter blocks and get to the ball-carrier.
Weaknesses
- Hip tightness creates clunky openings against press release.
- Double moves and route fakes tend to manipulate him more than they should.
- Below-average make-up speed when beaten deep.
- Delayed in his plant-and-drive from the top of his backpedal.
- Needs to get his head around sooner to find the football."
Neal received a 5.97 grade, commensurate with a C: "Average backup or special teamer," according to NFL.com. The late-bloomer label is intriguing, though, pointing to recent improvements which, if addressed and developed, could raise Neal's profile and cause one NFL team to fall in love with him on Day 3. Maybe he could rise to the early part of the fifth round or the back end of the fourth round.
With Arkansas' Taylen Green rated outside the top 200 draft prospects, Neal joins Mike Washington as the only two Arkansas football players expected to be picked in the top 200 of this NFL draft. Every now and then, a back-end draft pick soars way beyond the conventional wisdom and prevailing expectations. We will soon see if Julian Neal can be one such NFL draft surprise story.
