Arkansas gets official word that Miikka Muurinen can play for the Hogs
If Arkansas football is full of bad news, Arkansas basketball is full of great news. The latest piece of great news for John Calipari came down on Thursday. Star recruit Miikka Muurinen was ruled eligible to play for the 2026-2027 season. He will suit up as a Razorback.
ESPN college basketball recruiting analyst Paul Biancardi wrote about Muurinen, “He has excellent mobility and agility and can outrun most opponents with his sheer speed, long strides and hunger to score. Muurinen is an explosive lob catcher and an emphatic finisher. He also possesses rare body control for his size. On the offensive glass, he is a terrific vertical putback rebounder. Defensively, he shows instincts for jumping passing lanes for steals and has a knack for rotating over for help side blocks. He excels in screen and roll actions with hard dunks, short rolls to attack, or when he pops up, where he has range to the 3-point line. He does his best work inside the arc, driving and finishing or off-ball cutting and on putbacks.”
Getting Muurinen is huge for all the obvious reasons, but the biggest one is that even though Arkansas showed a lot of upside on its Bahamas summer tour of exhibition games, Muurinen had not yet been cleared before that week of basketball. So, what you saw of Arkansas basketball that week was not the product of a complete roster with everyone aboard and playing. Just imagine that week with Muurinen on court, getting 15 to 20 minutes a game and being able to share the court with his Arkansas teammates. As good as the Hogs looked with the players they had, they were missing one very big piece. Now they get Muurinen on the court for the coming season. Maybe Muurinen will play mid-20s minutes. Maybe he will play only 15-18 minutes. We don't really know how the rotation is going to work out in light of the fact that Muurinen missed the Bahamas tour and therefore might lag behind his teammates in terms of development. It could be that what we see in early November will not be what we see in early December or in January.
What matters, though, is that Calipari can now blend Muurinen into the rotation, mixing and matching for offense, defense, and two-way quality. He now has more options to consider in giving Arkansas the best five-player lineup for various situations. Whether Muurinen is part of UA's best five-man lineup, or part of the best five-man offensive combination, remains to be seen, but now Arkansas has a very talented piece available. Teammates will get a chance to play with him in live games. Perhaps we won't see the full measure of Muurinen in the early weeks of the season, but he will be fully integrated into the lineup before the SEC season begins, and it should be all hands on deck when we get to the NCAA Tournament. Arkansas, widely seen as a Sweet 16-caliber team at worst and an Elite Eight-level team even without Muurinen, now has that much more of a chance to make a run at the 2027 Final Four.
