KJ Jackson underwhelmed at quarterback. Arkansas faces tough questions
The outlook for the 2026 Arkansas football team after one game is not positive. We simply can't avoid that uncomfortable reality after a sluggish and ugly win over North Alabama. The Hogs were favored by 40.5 points. They won by only 17, 31-14. They needed over 14 minutes to score their first points. They did not score more than a touchdown in any of the four quarters. Let's be very clear here: The Arkansas offensive line is a huge problem, bigger than quarterback or various other position groups on the roster. KJ Jackson definitely needs help, and he just as definitely did not receive that help against North Alabama. Jackson was on the run against an FCS defense far more than he was banking on, and that is certainly embarrassing. However, an SEC-caliber quarterback needs to make plus-level plays and show an ability to change the game in meaningful ways.
Jackson didn't do that very often against North Alabama.
Jackson spent the day throwing screens, checkdowns, and various other short passes. He didn't show he could buy a lot of time in the pocket. He evaded the rush a few times, but only to throw a short pass. We didn't see plays in which Jackson could buy himself several extra seconds and then hit a 40-yard downfield pass. We didn't see Jackson take off and scoot for a 35-yard run. We didn't see him change the field or overwhelm the opposing defense with his arm or his athleticism. Arkansas' offense looked extremely limited.
Can we chalk up some of this to the new scheme under a new coach in a season opener? Sure ... but the problem here is that if there was understandable rust and sluggishness in the first quarter, that sluggishness never really melted away. It remained in place for much of the game. We didn't see the offense dramatically open up and start landing roundhouse punches. It remained an offense in which short passes and screens were moving the ball.
A traditional power running game did not exist. Neither did a downfield passing attack. The offensive line deserves most of the blame, but KJ Jackson - against North Alabama - has to find a way to be more personally impactful. What is he going to do against Utah and Georgia and the other markedly better teams (with better athletes and coaches) waiting to face the Hogs this season?
There's one other question we have to ask, and it is not a comfortable one: If KJ Jackson was this underwhelming in the season opener, but he still beat out AJ Hill, what does it say about the status of the UA quarterback room?
Let that one sit for a minute. Arkansas' offense has a ton of work to do.
