Arizona State Faces Upset Loss to University of Houston cover image

Arizona State University was ranked going into a home game against one-loss Houston but gets dominated all game.

The Arizona State Sundevils entered the matchup against Houston ranked #24 in the country and on a 10-game home winning streak.

That streak was soon snapped as the Sundevils snapped under pressure and were defeated by the Houston Cougars 24-16.

Houston had its way from the opening kickoff with the Sundevils. Putting up ten points in the first quarter, the Cougars never gave up control of the game.

It seemed as if quarteback Sam Leavitt and the ASU could never find a rhythm throughout the game or at least struggled to keep a rhythm going in the game.

It was the end of the third quarter and the Sundevils had yet to get on the board. Houston going into the fourth quarter up 24-0, ASU attempted a late rally, with five minutes left in the Arizona State cut the lead to eight.

Throughout the game ASU committed 12 penalties and had missed two field goals. With self-inflicting wounds happening all game the lead that the Cougars made in the first half just seemed to be too much for the Sundevils to come back from.

Houston never let up in the entire game, staying disciplined and minimal penalties, a fluid offense and no turnovers kept it a sure win for the Cougars. This is a great Big 12 win for Houston, improving to an overall record of 7-1 and 4-1 in conference play.

The Cougars entered a hostile environment on the road with a ranked contender are hoping if they can continue this style of play, it will look good with the post season committee in hope of being possible candidates of college footballs top-12.

Arizona State University on the other hand will sadly slide back out of the rankings for the third time this season. The Sundevils have a challenge next week ahead, traveling to Iowa State to play the cyclones.
