After the Auburn Tigers parted ways with former head coach Hugh Freeze in November, Atletics Director John Cohen understood the importance of getting it right when bringing in the program's next head coach.
Cohen is confident he has found the right guy for the job in Alex Golesh.
Leading Auburn back to being an annual contender in the SEC is a tall task, but Cohen is confident in Golesh's ability to get the job done.
"Winning organizations are built by those who want to be here," Cohen said. "Alex Golesh wants to be at Auburn, and Auburn wants Alex Golesh to be here. His resume and life experience lines up perfectly with the Auburn Creed. He has a spirit that’s not afraid. He’s not afraid to compete at the highest level of college football, and not afraid of expectation. He’s not afraid to tackle one of the most difficult schedules in college football, year-in and year-out."
Rebuilding programs is not a new concept to Golesh, as he had his work cut out for him when he arrived at South Florida.
Cohen outlined how that experience could be a difference-maker for the Tigers as they look to get things back on track under Golesh's leadership.
"He was not afraid to take on a massive rebuilding job at South Florida and go on to succeed at a high level," Cohen said of Golesh. "He took over a South Florida program that won a combined four games in three years, including the year before Alex got there when South Florida went 1-11. So essentially he took over a 1-11 football team before he got there. So that’s four wins in three years before he got there, and 23 wins the following three wins, with a nine-win season this year that could easily be a 10-win season if he was coaching in their bowl game."
There is plenty of work for Golesh to do, but Cohen is confident he will find a way to make it happen.
