Following its fifth loss of the season, Auburn has fired its head football coach.

After falling 10-3 at the hands of the Kentucky Wildcats at home inside Jordan-Hare Stadium on Saturday night that dropped their record to 4-5 and 1-5 in SEC play, the Auburn Tigers have made the decision to move on from head coach Hugh Freeze.

Pete Nakos of On3 was the first to report the news on Sunday afternoon.

“I have informed Coach Freeze of my decision to make a change in leadership with the Auburn Football program," Auburn athletics director John Cohen said in an official release from the university. "Coach Freeze is a man of integrity, and we are appreciative of his investment in Auburn and his relentless work over the last three years in bolstering our roster. Our expectations for Auburn Football are to annually compete for championships and the search for the next leader of Auburn Football begins immediately.”

Since hiring Freeze in November 2022, Auburn has gone 15-19. The Tigers made one bowl game appearance during that time, losing the 2023 Music City Bowl in blowout fashion to the Maryland Terrapins.

The Tigers only who six games against SEC opponents under the leadership of Freeze, and three of them came during the first season of his tenure.

That season also included a 31-10 loss to the New Mexico State Aggies at home, widely considered to be one of the worst losses in program history, immediately followed by a heartbreaking loss to the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Playing inside Jordan-Hare Stadium, commonly cited as one of college football’s most difficult environments for opposing teams, didn’t even provide much assistance for Freeze and company.

Auburn won nine home games in 22 attempts with Freeze at the helm of the program.

Throughout this season, Freeze has repeatedly expressed how close he believes the team is to getting over the hump and converting close losses into wins.

The day after one of the worst home offensive performances in the history of Auburn football, the fewest amount of points it has put on the board since being shut out by Georgia in 2012, the line will officially not be crossed under his leadership.

At this time, Auburn has not yet announced who will serve as the program’s interim head coach.
