Auburn’s defensive coordinator will step into the interim head coaching role.

Immediately following the announcement of the firing of head coach Hugh Freeze, DJ Durkin has been tabbed as the Auburn Tigers’ interim head coach.

On3 was the first to report the news on Sunday afternoon.

Durkin has served as Auburn’s defensive coordinator since the 2024 season.

Unlike the last time Auburn required an interim head coach, there was someone on the coaching staff to call upon with head coaching experience.

Durkin was at the helm of Maryland’s program from 2016-2018, and was Florida’s interim head coach in 2014.

The Tigers’ first contest under the leadership of Durkin will take place on the road, as the Tigers travel to Nashville for a matchup with the No. 16 Vanderbilt Commodores on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. CT and SEC Network will carry the broadcast.
