Auburn football suffered its second straight blowout loss, falling 45-15 to Ole Miss in Oxford. Alex Golesh's Tigers struggled with penalties, offensive line protection and just 63 rushing yards as they dropped to 4-4 overall and 2-4 in SEC play ahead of next week's matchup against Arkansas.
The Auburn Tigers Fall once again in embarrassing fashion for the second straight week, losing to Ole Miss 45-15 in Oxford.
The Tigers now move to 4-4 on the season and 2-4 in SEC play, following the completion of their tough October schedule.
Here is what you need to know from the contest.
Offense Finally Finds Groove Early, But Not For Long
Although the Auburn Tigers are still one of the very few teams left in the country to score on their opening drive of the game, the Tigers found some rhythm with their play calling and offense early on.
The team kept it competitive for the first half as they picked up multiple drives, extending over 6 minutes. The team picked up their first touchdown of the game in the second quarter when Byrum Brown found wide receiver Chas Nimrod on a deep pass for 21 yards.
Unfortunately, the extra point was blocked, and Auburn was only able to pick up another field goal right before halftime, making it 14-9, Ole Miss. The game got out of hand in the second half as the Rebels outscored Auburn 31-6 in the final two quarters.
New-Looking Offensive Line Better?
After one of the worst offensive line performances of the season last week against LSU, Alex Golesh made some changes to not only personnel but positions on the Tigers' offensive line.
The pass protection seemed to be better in terms of giving Byrum Brown enough time to throw the football. However, Ole Miss still found a way to record four sacks in the contest. Rushing-wise, something Auburn must have capitalized on to pull off an upset, Ole Miss entered the game ranked last in the SEC in rushing yards allowed per game, and it was atrocious. The Tigers only picked up 63 total rushing yards in the game.
Penalties a Major Problem
Discipline was another big issue in why Auburn couldn't extend drives or find a way to put points up on the board, especially in the second half on Saturday.
Cole Best, the Auburn Tiger center, was responsible for a couple of big penalties that ultimately cost Auburn about six points on the scoreboard during very crucial times around halftime. A holding call pushed the Auburn Tigers out of scoring position right before the first half came to an end, and they were forced to kick a field goal instead. Later in the third quarter, on the Auburn Tigers' second touchdown of the day, the team was forced to go for two after a penalty. That was also, by the way, when he false-started.
Auburn finished the day with 8 penalties for 67 yards. Although they had fewer penalty yards than the Rebels on the day, theirs were still more critical to the outcome.
What's Next?
The Auburn Tigers have four games remaining until potentially a postseason bowl bid if they can get to their sixth win. The team will head back home next Saturday as they host the Arkansas Razorbacks.
Arkansas is set to play 23rd-ranked Missouri in tonight's Saturday night action. The Razorbacks are currently 3-4 and 1-3 in conference play. Kickoff for next Saturday between Auburn and Arkansas is scheduled for 11:45 am Central.
