Auburn's SEC schedule begins with an immediate measuring stick. In the Tigers' conference opener, Alex Golesh squares off against fellow first-year head coach Jon Sumrall in a matchup that could shape the trajectory of both programs for the rest of the 2026 season.
The Auburn Tigers football season can’t come soon enough.
As exciting as the offseason has been on the Plains with the arrival of Alex Golesh as head coach, multiple big time transfers from the portal, and the momentum growing from the upcoming 2027 recruiting class, nothing beats the opening kickoff.
As we patiently wait for September 5 to roll around, Auburn Roundtable has launched an Offseason Opponent Preview for the Tigers upcoming season. Over the next few weeks, we will break down each one of Auburn’s games on the schedule.
Let’s get to it.
Week 3: September 19, 2026, 6:00 PM CT.
Auburn vs. Florida (SEC Home Opener)
Jordan-Hare Stadium, Auburn, Alabama
This is a big one.
Alex Golesh and Jon Sumrall, the two high profile new names on the block inside the SEC go head-to-head in their first ever conference game. This one will have bragging rights and likely a strong pull on how the rest of the season unfolds for their program as a whole.
Past History with Florida: Although both teams are in the SEC, this is a rare matchup in the past schedules, as it will be the first time the two teams have competed on the gridiron since 2019, when the Gators took down Auburn 24-13. The Tigers, however, hold the all-time record against Florida at 43-39-2, dating back to 1912.
Florida Snapshot: As mentioned above, Jon Sumrall has taken over as head coach of the Gators after the team fired Billy Napier last season. The team, like Auburn, dealt with a ton of turnover as Florida added 50 newcomers to their roster.
Key Matchups: The quarterbacks will definitely be a main talking point entering this contest, for opposite reasons. Bryum Brown will play in his first SEC game against the Gators after being in the Group of 6 his entire career with Golesh before making the jump this offseason. As for Florida, they still don’t have a sure fire pick for who will be the starting signal caller. It is projected to be Georgia Tech transfer Aaron Philo, a player who lacks experience at the college football level.
Interesting Storyline to Watch: Florida should have a good wide receiver core in 2026, led by a former Auburn player in Eric Singleton Jr. Players like Singleton can bail out a quarterback who is struggling better than most, and that could come in handy against a challenging DJ Durkin led defense.
Game Importance Ranking: When taking the 12 game schedule as a whole, this feels like the 2nd most important game of the season. It’s the first chance for Golesh to make his mark in the conference, and doing it early, against another new head coach who was a finalist for the Auburn job, would be incredible.
What’s Next: The Auburn Tigers will remain at Jordan-Hare Stadium as they prepare for their homecoming game against Vanderbilt in an Afternoon game on September 26.
