Alex Golesh didn't hesitate to defend Byrum Brown at SEC Media Days, calling him "one of the best quarterbacks in the country." The Auburn coach made it clear he believes Brown's production will translate to the SEC despite doubts surrounding his move from USF.
Alex Golesh didn't hesitate.
When the new Auburn Tigers head coach had his first opportunity to set the message straight at SEC Media Days on Tuesday, he did without a second thought.
When Golesh was asked what his quarterback Byrum Brown, who followed him from South Florida, had to do to be considered one of the best quarterbacks in the country by the end of the season, he simply stated what he already believes.
"Well, Byrum Brown is one of the best quarterbacks in the country."
After a growing narrative following his arrival to Auburn in this past transfer portal cycle that his talents might not translate the same from the AAC to the SEC, the Tigers head coach obviously had enough and needed to clear the air.
Golesh didn't stop there. He continued by saying, "he's shown that over the years. What's got to happen for Byrum is he's just got to continue to be him every single day. And what gives him confidence is everything that we've preached from day one. It's your daily process. It's how you come in that building. It's how you treat people. It's how you take care of your body. It's how you show up to work."
It's hard not to understand the frustration and need to show his confidence in Brown, a quarterback who has been with Golesh since his first year as the head coach of USF. But loyalty also doesn't have anything to do with it.
Brown had a season to remember in 2025. Only 13 quarterbacks in FBS college football history have recorded at least 3,000 passing yards and 1,000 rushing yards in a single season. Last year, Byrum Brown was one of them.
If Byrum Brown had put together the exact same numbers wearing an SEC logo or even playing at a traditional Power Four program, we'd probably already be talking about him as one of the nation's premier quarterbacks. Instead, the conversation has been, "Can he make the jump from the American to the SEC?"
And honestly, I think Coach Golesh knows exactly how the national media views his quarterback. He seems very well tuned into the national perception around him and his program. He isn't blind to the narratives surrounding Auburn. He knows people are waiting for proof of concept. He knows Brown still has doubters because of where he played last season.
Now the opportunity is here. And although he did well against the power conference opponents he faced last year, Brown gets to prove it every week in the biggest conference in college football.
