Auburn baseball is making a major coaching change as Gabe Gross transitions into a new role within Auburn Athletics. After nine seasons on Butch Thompson's staff, the Tigers will begin searching for a new hitting coach as they prepare for the 2027 season.

The Auburn Tigers are making changes to their coaching staff.

Following two straight Super Regionals exits, head coach Butch Thompson has made a rare change to his coaching staff, moving on from Gabe Gross as the team's associate head coach.

According to the press release, Gross will transition into a new role within Auburn Athletics, serving as a special assistant for athletics engagement.

"My family and I have been incredibly blessed over the years by many things, but perhaps none more so than Auburn University and the game of baseball," Gross said. "It has been an incredible honor to serve as Auburn's hitting coach over the last nine years, an experience my entire family has cherished, but the time has come for me to transition into a different role for Auburn Athletics."

Over the past nine seasons as part of the coaching staff, Gross has helped lead the Tigers' offense to six postseason appearances, including five Super Regional appearances and two College World Series appearances.

During his time on The Plains as a coach, he has also been a huge asset on the recruiting trail, with seven top-15 recruiting classes during his tenure.

"Gabe is an Auburn Man through and through, and he's been a huge part of our program's success over the last nine seasons," said head coach Butch Thompson. "More than just a coach on staff, Gabe has helped me grow my love for Auburn and is a lifelong friend. He's poured into our student-athletes not only as their hitting coach, but also on a personal level, helping shape them into both better ballplayers and young men," Thompson added. "We're excited to keep him around in a new role that'll allow him to continue to make a difference and build a new connection with the Auburn Family."

Auburn will look to regroup, and a replacement could be announced as soon as this week. It is set to be a busy offseason for Thompson, as multiple players were recently drafted in the MLB Draft this past weekend, leaving multiple decisions on who will fill those roster spots in hopes of returning to Omaha for the first time since 2022.
