The Auburn Tigers appeared to be in trouble against the Texas Longhorns at home inside Neville Arena on Wednesday night, but they found a way to fight their way back and pick up their fourth win in a row.
Auburn (14-7, 5-3 SEC) trailed throughout the first half and the majority of the second, but it persisted and reclaimed the driver’s seat. When the final buzzer sounded, the Tigers managed to pick up an 88-82 victory over Texas (12-9, 3-5 SEC).
Texas quickly built a lead out of the gate, but it took a while for Auburn to find its footing and chip away at the deficit.
Like other times this season, Auburn found a way to get the job done when it mattered the most.
The Tigers trailed by eight with 14:39 left in the game, but a 3-pointer from Overton sparked the push that resulted in the comeback.
Keyshawn Hall and Kevin Overton made the difference for Auburn and they pathed the way for the comeback.
Overton knocked down another to bring Auburn within two, then Elyjah Freeman tied the game with a mid-range jumper.
While Texas hit a 3-pointer after that bucket, the comeback was set in motion.
Hall was Auburn’s leading scorer, KeShawn Murphy led the way in rebounds with five and Tahaad Pettiford led in assists with three.
The Tigers shot 24-of-57, 51%, from the field, 11-of-21, 52%, from 3-point range and 29-of-39, 74%, from the free-throw line.
Texas was led in points by Dailyn Swain who finished the game with 30 points. Swain also led the team in rebounds with seven and in assists with four.
The Longhorns shot 26-of-50, 52%, from the field, 12-of-26, 46%, from beyond the arc and 18-of-23, 78%, from the charity stripe.
Auburn returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Knoxville for a matchup with the Tennessee Volunteers (14-6, 4-3 SEC). Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. CT, and ESPN will carry the broadcast.
