Auburn’s defense is continuing to earn national respect heading into the 2026 season under coordinator DJ Durkin. After finishing among the SEC’s top defensive units last year, anonymous coaches believe the Tigers could become a dangerous team if the offense improves under new head coach Alex Golesh
The Auburn Tigers have undergone a massive change this offseason, moving on from former head coach Hugh Freeze after three losing seasons and only one bowl game appearance. The Tigers have put their full faith into Alex Golesh, who quickly became a rising name after his success with the USF Bulls.
As Golesh takes that huge step into the SEC, one thing that will certainly help him is one of the few coaches to stay from the old regime. Defensive coordinator DJ Durkin has established an identity as one of the best coaches on that side of the football in the country. After serving as the interim head coach following Freeze's termination, Durkin decided to remain with Auburn and the new staff heading into 2026.
This immediately helps the rebuilding program become a dangerous team in conference play. Some coaches in the industry haven't been afraid to let their voices be heard, and in the latest season preview edition of Athlon Sports CFB Magazine, an anonymous Coach had some positive comments on Auburn's defense from last season.
"They were really good on defense last year. They were the best defense that we saw. You add some offense with it, and they can be pretty good. I sense that there's gonna be a mentality to be who they are and not conform to the past and how things have been run there."
Durkin had Auburn's defense ranked 29th in total defense, allowing only 329.2 yards per game. They were elite against the run, allowing only 99.3 yards per game, their best single-season mark since 2003. And although the team lost some key players due to eligibility, the NFL Draft, or through the transfer portal, the defense is still poised to be a surprising unit once again inside the SEC.
"Teams that play them early, there's gonna be a surprise with how efficient they are with the guys that have been in that system."
Auburn begins the season at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia, against non-conference opponent Baylor Bears. The game will be the final of a home-and-home agreement after Auburn played and won 38-24 last season in Waco. In the game, the Tigers' defense held Baylor to only 64 yards on the ground.
