Auburn's 2027 recruiting class remains among the nation's best despite missing on Tae Walden Jr. and Joshua Dobson. We break down Alex Golesh's recruiting success, Top 10 class, SEC recruiting, DJ Durkin, flip candidates, and Auburn football's future.

The Auburn Tigers have built quite an impressive class for the 2027 cycle.

For what is truly Alex Golesh’s first class that will head to the Plains next season, they definitely exceeded expectations. It’s worth keeping that in mind, even if some premier players recently have decided to go in a different direction.

On Wednesday, two top prospects each chose other Power Conference destinations, leaving Auburn as the only finalist for their decisions. However, Auburn is in a much better place than most, as the optimism hasn’t been this high among that fanbase in at least a half-decade.

5-star cornerback Joshua Dobson picked South Carolina despite head coach Shane Beamer being the most likely candidate to be seen on the hot seat inside the SEC this year. Meaning a likely flip candidate before the season comes to a close, proving that NIL dollars most likely played a big role in his recruitment. With all the defensive backs that Auburn has added since May, such as Nash Johnson, Chase Gilbert, and Aidyn Wiggins, it’s likely that the Tigers probably were not even his second choice. Still, as of right now, it appears Golesh has found players that are completely committed to his vision.

The one that might sting the most also occurred on Wednesday as Tae Walden Jr. chose the Oregon Ducks over Auburn. What many believed would be a member of this class as a possible two-way player was beaten out on the recruiting trail by Dan Lanning. Oregon has been a recruiting monster in this new era of college athletics, and once they become a frontrunner, the writing on the wall becomes very clear. Walden is a player who already shows the potential to be an NFL-caliber player, and missing out on him could surely be one we look back on in a few years.

As of Thursday evening, the Auburn class sits at 25 impressive commits, all with realistic paths to playing time inside the upcoming roster, maybe as soon as their first year in 2027. With the new ‘5-for-5’ rules being established and the removal of the ‘redshirt year,’ this will only make the Tigers deeper and more competitive after a majority of veteran transfers who followed Golesh from South Florida run out of eligibility after this season.

We aren’t hanging banners for the offseason performance of Auburn inside the Golesh Era, however. Something that seemed to happen during the last coaching regime. Wins in recruiting only matter if they can perform on the field and result in winning seasons, something that Hugh Freeze struggled to do despite having top classes and flashy recruiting flips during his time at the helm.

Yet, it is still impressive what Alex Golesh and his coaching staff have accomplished during this cycle without any ‘proof of concept’ of it working inside the SEC. The next step is playing solid defense, and not just a DJ Durkin led one on the field. Auburn will have to fight to keep a good portion of this class together throughout the summer and fall before signing day in December.

The best strategy is keeping the Tigers in a positive light. A Big season opening win against the Baylor Bears, an SEC opening victory against another first year head coach in the conference, and potentially an impressive 5-0 start to begin the Golesh era are all scenarios that have been discussed and are certainly possible this upcoming season.
