Auburn cornerback Gavin Jenkins could be one of the Tigers' biggest breakout players in 2026. With DJ Durkin leading the defense and Auburn rotating heavily in the secondary, Jenkins has a real opportunity to earn significant snaps and make an impact this season.
The Auburn Tigers defense is one of the most elite in the SEC.
And with DJ Durkin returning, joining the new coaching staff on The Plains, it should be once again. But while some have focused on the biggest names on the roster like Xavier Atkins and Elijah Melendez, there are plenty of players on the Tigers defense that could truly break out.
One of those players is Gavin Jenkins.
Cornerback is one of Auburn's deepest position groups heading into the 2026 season, which has caused Jenkins to slip under the radar quietly.
With transfers like Andre Jordan Jr. coming over from UCLA this past offseason in the portal and returning playmakers like Rayshawn Pleasant receiving much of the attention this offseason, Jenkins has become somewhat of an afterthought despite putting himself in position to earn meaningful snaps this fall.
Even with the expectation that Pleasant and Jordan enter the season ahead of him on the depth chart, Jenkins still has a prime opportunity to make an immediate impact. Auburn will rotate several defensive backs throughout the year, and Jenkins has already shown he can step into big moments when his number is called.
Host of Locked on Auburn Zac Blackerby believes Auburn fans have overlooked just how important Jenkins could become.
"I do believe he'll be cornerback three," Blackerby said. "That doesn't mean he still doesn't play a ton of snaps and makes an impact."
With him arriving this offseason with a group of players following Alex Golesh to Auburn, it would be fair to assume his familiarity could give him a boost when making the jump into the Power Conferences. He only played in 4 games last season before redshirting. Still, he has shown the traits to be an elite corner, especially with development from Durkin and Cornerbacks coach DeMarcus Van Dyke.
Fall camp will certainly be important for Jenkins if he looks to make an impact early in the season, as well as some of the first few games on the Tigers schedule such as Baylor and Southern Miss. If he can get some solid reps during that time, he could become a reliable piece for the Auburn defense just in time for conference play.
