Auburn's wide receiver depth could become a major strength in Alex Golesh's fast-paced offense. While familiar names lead the room, players like DeShawn Spencer, Brian Williams Jr. and Christian Neptune have a chance to emerge as breakout playmakers before Week 1.
It will be very important for the Auburn Tigers to have options when it comes to the offensive skill positions this season.
With the new regime led by Alex Golesh, the offense is set to look completely different once Week 1 arrives against the Baylor Bears.
Especially faster.
Golesh utilizes speed and tempo in his scheme to limit substitutions of the defense and to take advantage of mismatches when presented. Those mismatches are what will set the Tigers apart this year.
The wide receiver room is fascinating for Auburn this year as multiple players followed Golesh from South Florida in the transfer portal.
Although some of the main targets may already be easy to point out heading into fall camp this week, the depth of the position that can still have major impacts on the field is yet to be determined.
In other words, which wide receiver will break out before the season begins?
The three former Bulls in Keshaun Singleton, Chas Nimrod and Jeremiah Koger are expected to see the majority of the target share from Byrum Brown to begin the year, but based on how Golesh utilized multiple weapons last year. There is still plenty for the taking.
Last year at South Florida, 10 wide receivers recorded a reception and 7 recorded double digit receptions, the scheme is meant to be shared.
Christian Neptune is a great candidate to be a player to step up for Auburn this season. Last year in this same system, he had 38 receptions for 335 yards and a touchdown. However, a shoulder injury has limited him and could open the door for more players as well.
Following a great A-Day performance, DeShawn Spencer might be the most ready for a boost in attention this fall. The freshman out of Mobile could become a perfect fit in this system with his quickness and ability to create space despite only being 5-11.
On the outside, another freshman could see a large amount of playing time early as Brian Williams Jr. has impressed plenty this spring. Although his A-Day numbers didn't jump off the page, his physical traits do. At 6-4, 210 lbs., the Orlando, Florida, first-year player could find himself getting plenty of contested routes to win early in the season.
The room could be very deep, with the top end of talent still being very elite. Add in a quarterback who threw for 3,000 yards last season and is always a threat to run, and the Auburn offense has the potential to be one of the most dangerous in the SEC in 2026.
We will get our true taste of what the wide receiver room will look like on September 5 when Auburn travels to Atlanta to face Baylor.
