Auburn's linebacker room is earning national recognition. Led by All-SEC standout Xavier Atkins and rising star Elijah Melendez, Bleacher Report named the Tigers' linebacker unit the best in college football, giving Alex Golesh another reason to believe Auburn's defense can lead a turnaround in 2026

The Auburn Tigers are finally seeing the respect they deserve.

Despite a losing season last year and a coaching change after moving on from Hugh Freeze, the Tigers defense is set to be one of the best once again in the SEC.

Alex Golesh, who was hired as the new Auburn coach this offseason, smartly chose to keep former interim head coach DJ Durkin back to his original role as defensive coordinator inside the program. This helped retain plenty of great players on defense, who will hopefully help Auburn reach its first winning season since 2019 (excluding COVID).

One of the main reasons Durkin's defense will be elite once more in 2026 is the linebacker room. And this group is getting their well deserved respect. Earlier this week, Bleacher Report projected Auburn to have the best linebacker room not only in the SEC, but all of college football.

David Kenyon writes, "While the offense is undergoing an overhaul with first-year coach Alex Golesh, the defense is largely composed of returning talent.

Xavier Atkins, a first-team All-SEC selection, returns to headline the unit. He collected 84 tackles with 17.0 for loss (nine sacks) last season, all of which led Auburn's defense at any position.

Elijah Melendez made a nice impact as a true freshman, notching 29 stops and a pair of interceptions. He should start alongside Atkins.

Auburn also has promising depth with Demarcus Riddick and Bryce Deas, who gained valuable experience in 2025 while Riddick—a young standout in 2024—dealt with recovery from shoulder surgeries.

As the program aims to rejoin the ranks of SEC contenders, at least Auburn knows its defense has a sturdy group in the middle."

Xavier Atkins was the only Auburn player listed on the On3 Top-100 players entering the season, so the respect for some of the returners of the roster is starting to get paid attention to. Elijah Melendez will be the true wildcard of the room. Many expect him to break out in 2026 and possibly become the best of the group once the season comes to a close. If this becomes a reality, Auburn could find themselves in a way better position than just fighting for bowl eligibility.

This linebacker room heading into the season is certainly strong, and that strength doesn't stop after the 2026 season. Golesh and Durkin are already working tirelessly on the recruiting trail and have added two premier linebackers. The 2027 class currently includes two 4-Star linebackers in Kareem Palmer and Top-100 player Isaac McNeil.

This room may be seen as the best in the country, but its potential to get even better over the years is very real.
