Bryson Washington enters Auburn fall camp with more to prove than anyone on the roster. After Alex Golesh publicly challenged the Baylor transfer twice this offseason, the battle for the No. 2 running back role behind Jeremiah Cobb is one of the Tigers' biggest storylines.
With plenty of new names on the roster, the Auburn Tigers will have one of the most exciting fall camps across the entire country.
As Alex Golesh brings 40 new players to the Plains, the program looks to quickly turn Auburn back into its winning culture.
And for all the excitement surrounding Auburn's roster heading into fall camp, there may not be a player with more on the line than running back Bryson Washington.
The former Baylor standout joined Auburn out of the transfer portal this offseason, and it felt like one of the first major wins for Golesh outside his South Florida players following him to the new coaching gig.
In fact, early discussions began to speculate if he and Jeremiah Cobb could be seen as one of the SEC's better running back duos in the country. So far, there is plenty of reason to believe that will not be happening this season.
Alex Golesh has publicly challenged Washington twice this offseason, something worth keeping in mind heading into the opening game of the year against his former squad.
The first came after Auburn's A-Day game when Golesh made it clear there was still work to be done. Then, while speaking in Tampa during SEC Media Days, Golesh once again suggested Washington wasn't quite where he needed to be.
When a head coach sends the same message multiple times, it's usually intentional. Especially if it's coming from someone like Golesh, who has given anyone a reason to believe anything is for show when it comes to his words. He has been all business since arriving at Auburn.
If Washington isn't ready, there are still a few players that could step up and make this room just as good heading into the new season.
While Jeremiah Cobb looks every bit like the feature back Auburn expected him to become, both Omar Mabson and Nai Davenport have continued generating positive buzz throughout the spring.
Washington does have an edge when it comes to prior experience and proven success at a power conference, as he has rushed for over 1800 yards across the last two seasons with Baylor.
Filling the shoes of Cobb and helping share the workload this season effectively are both important features that I believe Golesh and his offensive staff will pay close attention to when making their decision. Each of these 3 running backs has the opportunity to get the role behind Cobb, and fall camp should give us those answers.
