Alex Golesh's SEC track record is being overlooked. Before turning around South Florida, Auburn's new head coach helped lead Tennessee to an 18-7 record as offensive coordinator, proving he already knows how to build a winning offense in the SEC.
You could make the argument that one of the biggest themes surrounding the Auburn Tigers this offseason has been patience.
After a half-decade of failed coaching attempts, a new coaching staff enters the Plains with a new quarterback and a new roster. Most people outside this program assume that it's a team that will need some time before it starts competing at the highest levels inside the SEC.
However, new Auburn quarterback Byrum Brown didn't receive the message.
And he doesn't see it that way.
Last week at SEC Media Days, Brown was asked about the culture Alex Golesh is trying to establish at Auburn and whether it's something that naturally will take multiple years to build. Byrum Brown has been a quarterback under Golesh's system his entire career at South Florida and was the perfect person to answer the question. His answer made one thing very clear: nobody inside the Auburn Tigers locker room is waiting around.
"See, that's the thing," Brown said in an interview with Locked on Auburn in Tampa. "We're trying to get there year one. We're not trying to wait until year two, year three. We're trying to build this culture right now."
While Golesh was busy setting the standard and explaining how the identity will take priority during the first season of Auburn football, Byrum Brown was willing to go a step further and say he believes it's already there.
It makes a ton of sense that a player like Brown would want to speed up the process, as he is in his final year of eligibility and only has one chance to make things work at Auburn. The former South Florida quarterback had a year to remember in 2025, when he threw for over 3,000 yards and rushed for over 1,000. Only one of 13 quarterbacks in college football history to share the feat.
There's a small chance that it could just be a quarterback in his final year trying to do everything he possibly can to make the last seconds count. But for what we have already found out about this new coaching staff and the players that have come along with Alex Golesh, talk isn't cheap with this group.
And Byrum Brown isn't talking like someone preparing for a long rebuild here at Auburn. Instead, he's talking like someone who believes Auburn's time is now.
