Auburn defensive coordinator DJ Durkin addressed three major challenges ahead of facing No. 1 Georgia: fixing the Tigers' run defense, replacing Xavier Atkins with Bryce Deas and De'Marcus Riddick, and preparing for Gunner Stockton and the Bulldogs' versatile offense.

The Auburn Tigers defensive coordinator DJ Durkin met with the media Monday ahead of their matchup against No. 1 Georgia, and there were several interesting comments about the team's defensive struggles.

From stopping the run to replacing Xavier Atkins, Durkin discussed what Auburn worked on during the bye week and what needs to improve against the Bulldogs.

Here are my three biggest takeaways from his press conference.

1. Auburn's run defense was a major priority during the bye week

One of Auburn's biggest defensive problems this season has been stopping opposing rushing attacks, especially against Florida and Tennessee.

And it sounds like Durkin spent plenty of time addressing those issues during the bye week.

"Big thing for us was working on violent block defeat," Durkin said. "I think that's a major deal at all three levels. It shows up at D-line, linebacker, DB."

Durkin explained that Auburn returned to fundamentals, including drills the Tigers worked on during training camp.

But what interested me most was his explanation of why opposing offenses have been able to create explosive rushing plays.

According to Durkin, some of Auburn's biggest problems have come from defenders being out of position or failing to properly execute their run fits.

"We're playing good teams and good backs, you can't do that. You got to be sound every snap," Durkin said.

Georgia enters Saturday averaging 211.8 rushing yards per game, and the Bulldogs have enough offensive talent to take advantage of those mistakes.

Auburn can't afford another performance where one missed assignment turns into a significant gain.

2. Bryce Deas and De'Marcus Riddick will have bigger roles

With Xavier Atkins unavailable against Georgia, Auburn will need additional production from its linebackers.

Durkin specifically mentioned Bryce Deas and De'Marcus Riddick as players who will receive increased opportunities.

"I always feel like in that room all those guys are considered starters," Durkin said.

Deas has already received significant playing time this season, while Riddick continues working his way back from last year's injury.

Replacing Atkins won't be easy, but Auburn needs both players to contribute.

3. Georgia's offensive versatility presents another problem

Durkin also discussed the challenges of preparing for Georgia's offense, particularly its ability to use different personnel groupings.

The Bulldogs have a versatile tight end room, an effective rushing attack, and a quarterback in Gunner Stockton who understands the offense.

"They have answers for things," Durkin said.

Auburn has struggled when opposing offenses adjust their approach, and Georgia has the personnel to attack several different weaknesses.

Durkin has had two weeks to address those problems.

Now we'll see whether those adjustments actually translate onto the field.
