Auburn commit Nash Johnson may be the most underrated recruit in the Tigers' 2027 class. We break down why Alex Golesh and DJ Durkin targeted the talented cornerback, his impressive offer sheet, recruiting rankings, and why he's a future SEC standout.
The Auburn Tigers have exceeded expectations on the recruiting trail this year. With Alex Golesh taking over as the head coach this offseason, the 2027 class is his first true chance to get the right guys inside the program he hopes to develop over the next 4 seasons.
As this class has landed some premier prospects such as Myson Johnson-Cook, Layton von Brandt and Isaac McNeil, there are still plenty of great players inside the class that continue to fly under the radar.
One of those recruits is Nash Johnson.
Since the beginning of his recruitment, he has been treated much better than his recruiting profile gives him credit for.
Johnson is a 3-Star cornerback from McEachern High School in Atlanta, Georgia. He is considered the 59th best corner in the class and 66th best overall player in the state of Georgia. However, his film and how other power conference schools have treated him before his decision to commit to Auburn says otherwise.
The Georgia native originally committed to Alabama before ultimately reopening his recruitment. He held major offers from 25 different schools, 8 of which he took some sort of visit to. Some of the schools that wanted him in their class were Clemson, Tennessee, Ole Miss and Georgia.
Offer sheets tend to be a better indicator than just what type of ‘star recruit’ a high school player is, as it shows multiple big-time talent evaluators believe in the person’s talent. When multiple powerhouse programs aggressively go after someone, as happened with Johnson, it often signals they are valued more highly than the industry rankings suggest.
Once Nash Johnson committed, the strategy of searching for another top-end type of talent at corner slowly began to vanish for Golesh in the 2027 class as well. Giving us another reason to believe that the coaching staff firmly believes he has the potential to be an impact player during his time on The Plains.
The level of competition he plays at at McEachern is also a strong indicator of how quickly he could translate to the SEC and possibly see some playing time as early as his freshman season.
There is no rush, however, and the cornerback room is quite young for Auburn over the next few seasons. Still, based on the recent track record with defensive back success under DJ Durkin, Nash Johnson III should be in a good spot to rise when his moment arrives.
