It doesn't take much football knowledge to understand Auburn football head coach Hugh Freeze is in a difficult position.
His third season at the helm of the program, the year which he believed would present visible progress on the field, and more importantly in the win column, is over halfway completed, yet the Tigers have a losing record, 3-4, and have gotten off to an 0-4 start in SEC play for the third year in a row.
As a result of the lackluster performance Auburn has had through the first part of the season, fans of the program and national media voices within the sport have started to call for a change in the program's leadership.
In a time when Freeze is losing seemingly losing support at a rapid pace, he believes a statement of support from athletic director John Cohen would be beneficial.
“It’d be huge," Freeze said. "That would make everyone feel a lot better, for sure. I haven’t talked to John (Cohen). I will say John has been so supportive ever since my hire. I don’t get too much into, they have a job to do, certainly, and he has people he has to answer to."
Much like he has done after previous losses this season, Freeze expressed how close he believes things are to clicking for Auburn.
"I know how close we are, and I know I can get this fixed," Freeze said. "We’re too dang close. We have to get a little bit better play and a little bit better coaching at a few spots. I want a chance to fix this. I’ve totally gotten off of all social media, so I’m not sure what exactly was said in those other cases, but that has to be reassuring to those people in there that they believe they can get it fixed."
Freeze emphasized how much he believes in Cohen to make decisions regarding Auburn's athletic programs and also stated the confidence he still has in his abilities to lead Auburn back to being a contender in the SEC.
"I’ve trusted John since I’ve been here to do the right things, and he has to do what he feels is best for this program, of course," Freeze said. "I think it’s us. I think we fit Auburn. I think we fit the Auburn culture. I think the culture in the building has changed. I think the talent level has changed. Unfortunately, we just haven’t gotten over the hump in a very difficult stretch of games, but I believe that’s coming very, very soon.”
Whether or not Freeze is still the long-term answer for Auburn remains to be seen, but finding a way to turn the season around, beginning with a road win over Arkansas this week, would be a step in the right direction.
