The Auburn Tigers have a chance to punch their ticket to a bowl game and eliminate No. 10 Alabama from the playoffs during the process in the 90th edition of the Iron Bowl.
What does Auburn need to do to make that happen? Multiple things, but one of the top requirements is getting back in a groove defensively.
The Tigers' defense will need to be at its best, and interim head coach DJ Durkin is determined to help it perform at the highest level possible.
Durkin is aware that Alabama can move the ball in a variety of ways, so Auburn's defensive will have to be prepared to stop multiple types of attacks.
“They probably count their run game as perimeter screens and quick passes to the receivers," Durkin said. "They’re creative about getting the ball to their playmakers and getting it to them fast and letting them run with it. So, I think that’s the extension of the run game. I know it doesn’t show up in the stats as the run game, but that’s a big part of it. They have very talented backs."
Additionally, Durkin expressed how Auburn's front seven will need to have one of its best performances of the season as Alabama's offensive line is one of the country's best.
The Tigers will need to be disruptive and pressure Ty Simpson to put itself in the best possible position to succeed.
"Their offensive line is really good," Durkin said. "They’re athletic. They do a good job of moving on their stretch, getting on the perimeter, so you have to make sure that you can do both, stop the run and defend the pass. I don’t think they’re a one-dimensional team.”
Time will tell if Auburn will snap Alabama's Iron Bowl win streak, or if another tally will be added to the Crimson Tide's consecutive win column.
