Despite a narrow loss to UCF, the Cougars remain firmly in the national title hunt as major analysts project a historic 12-team bracket appearance for BYU.
We've finally hit the point where bowl game projections are starting to matter. As the college football season approaches the final month, the BYU Cougars is trying to remain a one-loss team.
The College Football Playoff contender, the Cougars could make history and make the final 12-team bracket. No. 6 BYU suffered the first loss of the season in double overtime to UCF last weekend. They'll have plenty of time to recover for a final run. The Cougars are 6-1 overall and 3-1 in Big 12 action.
However, the win over then-No. 2 Notre Dame will add an extra boost to its CFP resume. If the Utes and Cougars finish the season strong, there is a solid chance that both teams could end up representing the Big 12 in the Playoff.
Here are the latest bowl game projections from four sources (ESPN, The Athletic, On3, and CBS Sports)
BYU’s bowl projection: CFP first round, No. 7 seed hosting No. 10 seed Wake Forest.
Bonagura has BYU beating Wake Forest and advancing to the CFP quarterfinals before losing to No. 2 seed Ohio State.
BYU’s bowl projection: CFP first round, No. 9 seed playing at No. 8 seed Utah.
Schlabach has Utah beating BYU and advancing to the CFP quarterfinals before losing to No. 1 seed Miami. However, this would be an amazing rematch in the Playoff.
BYU’s bowl projection: CFP first round, No. 11 seed playing at No. 6 seed Kentucky.
McMurphy didn't go further with his prediction.
BYU’s bowl projection: CFP first round, No. 10 seed playing at No. 7 seed Alabama.
Dochterman has the winner of BYU-Alabama facing No. 2 seed Ohio State in the Rose Bowl in the CFP quarterfinals.
BYU’s bowl projection: CFP first round, No. 8 seed hosting No. 9 seed LSU.
Crawford didn't go further in his prediction.
BYU faces a unique opportunity, and there isn't one major outlet that has the Cougars outside the Playoff. The November 7th date with Utah will be one of the most important in the history of the rivalry.
But the one to watch will be Schlabach's prediction of a rivalry rematch in the College Football Playoff. If both teams from the Beehive State make the cut for the final 12 teams, having them play each other in the first round would be exciting.
BYU travels to Utah next Saturday at Noon ET on ABC or ESPN.
