The three-star tight end and multi-sport standout reopened his recruitment mid-mission, sparking an immediate pursuit from rival Utah as the landscape shifts for the 2027 season.

BYU Cougars football signee Jackson Doman has requested a release from his letter of intent, per a statement.

The 6-foot-5, 215-pound three-star tight end, who's currently on his LDS mission, announced that he is re-opening his recruitment before coming back to school in 2027. The news caught many off-guard as he already signed with the program last year.

"After prayerful consideration, Jackson has requested his release from BYU," Doman's family posted on his behalf to his X account. "It was not an easy decision, and he wants to express his gratitude to Coach Gilbride and Ena and the staff at BYU who helped him get to this point. As he finishes his two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, I will be handling his communications and recruiting process from this account."

Doman chose BYU over several western teams, including Colorado State, Nevada, and Washington State. He's a high three-star with an 89 rating who's also a two-time state wrestling champion in Oregon. The Cougars tight end room is one of the deepest in the country with four-star talents Brock Harris and Ty Goettsche preparing to be there next year. Walker Lyons and Roger Saleapaga are currently in Provo, along with Noah Moeaki, Keayen Nead, Matthew Fredrick, and Jacob Nye.

Utah offered Doman after his announced departure from BYU. One of the only teams who wasn't on his initial offer list when he chose the Cougars two years ago. Morgan Scalley might see things differently with the changing of the guard in Salt Lake City. He fits the multi-sport mold the Utes are looking for under the current coaching staff.

Doman will get off his mission in 2028 but will have a college decision made well before then. If Utah takes over as the replacement for BYU, this will become more interesting. The landscape for both teams might look a little different when he arrives on campus.

Exactly ten hours after Doman’s family tweeted the news that he was reopening his recruitment, a peculiar new tweet emerged. The image is completely AI generated. Utes logos and imagery with “Jackson Doman” and “Offered” over an image of a nondescript football player in a Utah uniform.

The text of that tweet seems more plausible than the imagery. “Thank you, Mikey Jacobsen and Coach Wells. Excited about Coach Scalley’s vision for Utah Football.” The safe assumption, based on the first post and the second post, is that Doman’s family is managing the recruitment via his X account, as previously mentioned.

Within the ten-hour window, it's possible Utah will put on the full court press. While the BYU coaching aspect is unchanged, the one for Utah is very different than it was when Doman signed.
