Fresh off a historic 12-2 season, the Cougars' star signal-caller prioritized loyalty over a massive payday, cementing his commitment to Provo despite aggressive poaching attempts from rivals.

Bear Bachmeier tore up the college football scene as a true freshman in 2025. The BYU Cougars accounted for 3,560 yards with 26 total touchdowns, leading his team to one of the best records in school history at 12-2. He was thrown into the fire early due to the abrupt dismissal of Jake Retzlaff. But made the best of his opportunity as BYU's starter.

Bachmeier's debut season caught the attention of many outside of Provo, including one Power Four team who offered him a multi-million dollar payday to leave BYU.

"I was told, Bear got an offer, you know, like five million bucks at a P4 school that he turned down, BYUtv Sports Nation host Jarom Jordan told ESPN the Fan in Salt Lake City. "He's not making that at BYU, but he wanted to be at BYU and return."

The news about Bachmeier surfaced after he was down in Thibodeaux, Louisiana as a camp counselor for the Manning Passing Academy. He was one of the chosen few to instruct others, along with Ole Miss' Trinidad Chambliss, Notre Dame' CJ Carr and Oklahoma's John Mateer. Bachmeier was one of three selected from the Big 12.

There's no doubt poaching has become normal practice within college football. Every team is looking for an advantage in the current era and will try to gauge the level of interest in certain players, regardless if they are in the transfer portal or not. This shouldn't be allowed, but the influence of money and power with few real regulations is a perfect storm for tampering to happen. This is no different from the situation better Clemson's Dabo Swinney and Ole Miss' Pete Golding fighting over proven transfer linebacker Luke Ferrelli.

Bachmeier's loyalty definitely shines through in this situation. The fact he could have left for a bigger payday but didn't is a clear indicator of his leadership and devotion to the program. He's ready to ride this out with his BYU teammates.

The Cougars are a projected front-runner and the conference race this season. After incurring two losses to Texas Tech, including one in the Big 12 championship game, Kalani Sitake's team are looking for redemption.

There's a good chance BYU will be one of the last teams standing in the College Football Playoff race towards the end of the season. They're a serious postseason threat who could end up with one of the top four seeds with their first-ever Big 12 title.
