The Clemson Tigers' game against Florida State is almost a must-win for Dabo Swinney.

There was a time not too long ago when the Clemson Tigers would have been heavy favorites heading into this Saturday matchup with the Florida State Seminoles.

But those days feel like an eternity ago.

Clemson is just 4-3 as it marches into Tallahassee to take on 3-4 Florida State, and it is a 5.5-point underdog. Yes, against a team below .500.

What in the world has happened to the Tigers?

Clemson lost at home to Virginia Tech last week and has gone 2-2 in ACC play thus far this season, and it seems like most are expecting Dabo Swinney and Co. to be 2-3 by the end of Saturday evening.

As crazy as it may sound, this is essentially a must-win game for Swinney.

Why? Because Florida State, much like Clemson, is back on its heels. The Seminoles are a fading program that has completely lost its way, and Mike Norvell is in far more trouble tan Swinney is with the Tigers.

At least Swinney has two national championships to his name. What does Norvell have?

Florida State, like Clemson, was once an ACC superpower, but it has now been relegated to a desperate ballclub starving for a signature win against a conference opponent.

This is really like a battle between two dying programs, and whoever loses will have a quicker death.

It's reached that point for the Tigers, who have gone just 11-10 over their last 21 games dating back to their CFP loss to Texas two years ago.

Swinney's seat is getting warmer and warmer, and Clemson's future is becoming more an more bleak, especially given its quarterback situation.

A win over the ailing Noles certainly wouldn't be a remedy for all of that, but it would at least show the Tigers are still capable of doing decent things once in a while.

Clemson did pull off an impressive comeback win over North Carolina earlier this season. That's pretty much the extent of anything notable it has done in 2026.

Sure, beating California on the road looked nice at the time, but the Golden Bears have now dropped to 3-5 after consecutive blowout losses. So how impressive was that win actually?

Beating Florida State on the road would be somewhat similar, but given the dire circumstances surrounding the event for Clemson, it would look a tad better.

It would also stave off the "fire Swinney" talk for the time being.

If the Tigers lose, though? Swinney may not want to turn on the television or read anything for the next week.
