Steve Spurrier pulls no punches after the Clemson Tigers’ historic 41-point blowout loss, placing a defiant Dabo Swinney squarely in the doghouse as the program’s season spirals.
It's going to be a long month for Clemson Tigers head coach Dabo Swinney.
After losing 51-10 to LSU in Week 1, there will be no redemption on the Tigers' schedule until they host No. 7 Miami on Oct. 3. In the meantime, Clemson will play Georgia Southern, North Carolina, and California.
Those should be easy wins for Clemson, but after what we witnessed on Saturday night, there might not be gimme contests for the Tigers.
During an episode of ‘A Dooley Noted Podcast’ on Monday, former South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier called out Swinney, saying that he was in the "doghouse" after losing to LSU by 41 points in Week 1.
“If we had a category for what coach is in the doghouse right now, it would have to be Dabo,” Spurrier said, via a transcription from On3. “Now, he could get out of it in one week with his team playing better.
"But, I’ve never seen (Clemson) dominated like that before. He got two new coordinators, so hopefully those guys will get better for Clemson.”
Saturday's loss was the worst ever for Swinney at Clemson, who talked a big game this offseason about making the program better after going 7-6 in 2025.
When speaking to reporters on Sunday morning, Swinney made sure to note that LSU had more resources than Clemson, but said it was his job to get the most out of his roster.
"We didn't do football stuff well enough," Swinney said. "I'm not sitting around judging other people on what their resources are or what they can do.
"It is what it is. It's our job to be the best we can be and we were not that tonight with what we have. It's my job to get us better.
This Clemson team isn't a College Football Playoff contender. It's too early to tell if it's a team worthy of going bowling.
The Tigers played 60 minutes of uninspired football, and their players didn't look like they wanted to be on the field by the second half.
There's no easy fix coming.
