As Clemson HC Dabo Swinney doubles down on his transfer portal boycott, a massive buyout and declining results threaten to turn the two-time champion’s dynastic legacy into a costly liability.

Clemson Has $57 Million Problem if Dabo Swinney Fails This FallMore Videos

Clemson Tigers head coach Dabo Swinney is as stubborn as ever following a 7-6 campaign in 2025.

During the ACC Kickoff media event last month, Swinney bragged about his decision not to bring an elite quarterback this offseason, though he noted he'd be a target for criticism if the winner of the battle between Tait Reynolds and Christopher Vizzina didn't produce.

"We weren't going to go get a shiny object (transfer) at quarterback," Swinney said. "If it doesn't work out, we're going to be raked over the coals."

Being "raked over the coals" might be the worst punishment Swinney could receive if Clemson fails to stay in the hunt for the ACC championship or College Football Playoff.

Blake Toppmeyer put Swinney in the "fine" category of his hot seat list, but thinks the situation for the two-time national champion head coach is worth monitoring this fall. Swinney's buyout of $57 million would likely keep Clemson from taking a drastic measure if the wheels fall off this year.

"When a legend like Swinney supplies a bad season, you don’t even think about firing him," Toppmeyer wrote. "What if he has consecutive bad seasons? Clemson fans widely cherish Swinney. They’ll give him a pass for last year’s fizzle if he rebounds, but Swinney’s dynasty is finished.

"One of the great sign-and-develop coaches of his generation, he’s struggled to adapt in the player free agency era. Swinney, 56, says he has no plans to retire. That’s grand if he wins. And if he doesn’t? Swinney’s resume and his $57 million buyout offer security, but a season that mirrors the last would accelerate angst."

While the fan base had some angst after a bad season in 2025, Swinney pointed to his past as reasons to have faith in his program.

Swinney's seasoning was fair. He should receive the benefit of the doubt for 2026.

But how much grace can Clemson give Swinney for his results when Deshaun Watson and Trevor Lawrence were on the roster?

Swinney is the sixth-highest paid coach in college football. If his program isn't worthy of being ranked, why should he be cashing checks like a top 10 coach?
