Clemson Tigers head coach Dabo Swinney has delivered a strong message on cornerback Ashton Hampton.
Clemson Tigers head coach Dabo Swinney definitely has some impressive talent at his disposal heading into the 2026 college football season, and much of it is on the defensive side of the ball.
Clemson boasts three potential first-round picks along the defense, specifically linebacker Sammy Brown, defensive end Will Heldt and cornerback Ashton Hampton.
Hampton in particular has been drawing significant buzz lately, with Dane Brugler of The Athletic going as far to rank him as the No. 3 cornerback in the 2027 NFL Draft class — a class teeming with talent at the position.
Swinney himself has now gone out of his way to gush about Hampton, delivering a strong message on the junior defender in fall camp.
“That is one guy I will single out — Ashton Hampton,” Swinney said, via The Clemson Insider. “I am really pleased with just his maturity. I think he shows up every day like he is playing in the Super Bowl. That is just the mindset he brings every day and I love it.”
Hampton arrived at Clemson in 2024 and saw immediate action during his freshman campaign, logging 27 tackles, a couple of interceptions (including a pick-six) and five passes defended.

Hampton actually flew under the radar a bit in 2025 as he was playing in the shadow of Avieon Terrell, who was ultimately selected by the Atlanta Falcons in the second round of the NFL Draft back in April.
With Terrell now on the professional circuit, Hampton is taking center stage in the Tigers' secondary, and Swinney seems to be thrilled about it.
In fact, Terrell was also named to the Preseason All-ACC team, joining Syracuse Orange cornerback Chris Peal as one of the two cornerbacks on the list.
Hampton stands nearly 6-foot-3 and weighs around 205 pounds, making him a rather imposing physical specimen at the position.
Additionally, the Tallahassee, Fl. native possesses tremendous athleticism and is very smooth in coverage, making him one of the best all-around corners in the country.
It will be interesting to see if Hampton can live up to his expectations this fall, especially after former top Clemson defenders like Peter Woods and T.J. Parker did not last year.
