Clemson Tigers head coach Dabo Swinney has been hit with a rather unflattering comparison heading into the 2026 college football season.
Clemson Tigers head coach Dabo Swinney certainly has a lot of detractors these days, which is wild considering how highly acclaimed he was just a few years ago.
Between 2015 and 2019, Clemson made it to four National Championship Games, winning two of them. At the time, there were some who were already preparing to hail Swinney as an all-time great.
But things have changed significantly since then.
The Tigers have not won a playoff game in six years, and they just went 7-6 in 2025, representing their worst finish since Swinney's second full season as head coach in 2010.
Swinney's reputation has fallen so far that Blake Toppmeyer of USA Today recently went as far to compare him to former Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze.
"It’s impossible to forget how good Dabo Swinney was in his prime. It’s impossible to forget, because Dabo won’t let us forget," Toppmeyer wrote. "Swinney used ACC media days as an opportunity to remind everyone of how good he used to be. ... Swinney’s giving off some serious Hugh Freeze at Auburn vibes. That’s, um, not a compliment."

Yes, Freeze did once brag how he should have beaten Nick Saban four times, but let's be real here for a second: Freeze does not have Swinney's resume.
Not even close.
Freeze has coached Arkansas State, Ole Miss, Liberty and Auburn over the course of 13 seasons. Over that time, he has gone 98-62 with three double-digit win campaigns. He has never won a national title, nor has he ever participated in a National Championship Game.
What's more, Freeze has finished below .500 four times in his head-coaching career.
Now, compare that with Swinney, who owns a lifetime 187-53 record with all of the hardware I mentioned earlier. He also posted 12 consecutive double-digit win seasons between 2011 and 2022 and logged another one in 2024.
Yes, last year was ugly, and there is no question that Swinney has lost some of his shine. But the Freeze comparison is a bit hyperbolic.
If Clemson comes out and lays an egg yet again this fall, then perhaps the Swinney haters will have more ground to stand on. For now, though, we need to give the 56-year-old another chance — especially with an impressive roster heading into 2026.
