Following a humbling loss to Virginia Tech, Dabo Swinney is recalibrating expectations as the Tigers abandon playoff dreams and fight to salvage a disappointing, sub-par season.
Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney made the argument that the 2025 season was outside of the norm for the program under his tenure.
That may be the case, but the 2026 campaign isn't a good mulligan.
The Tigers were badly outplayed late in their 16-13 loss to Virginia Tech on Saturday at home. The defeat dropped Clemson to 4-3 on the season and 2-2 in ACC play.
During his postgame news conference, Swinney said he planned to have serious conversations with offensive coordinator Chad Morris about how to fix things on that side of the ball. How much can be fixed in the final five games of the season remains to be seen.
But the goal of making the College Football Playoff is dead for Clemson, and Swinney waving the white flag on any of the big goals the program had during the preseason. Per Chapel Fowler of The State, Swinney told reporters that the Tigers would have to "shift some" of their season goals after dropping a third loss.
Clemson's top goal is finding a way to win the next game. Swinney is encouraged by how the locker room is handling the adverse season, and plans to regroup before Monday.
Swinney's tone seemed much different on Saturday night than the one he used after losses to LSU and Miami. Both of those teams are contenders for the College Football Playoff. Virginia Tech, led by first-year head coach James Franklin, is not. The Hokies are in the early phase of building a contender.
Saturday's loss to VT might have been more humbling than even the earlier blowouts because it shows how far the Tigers have fallen that they have to fight with some of the more mediocre ACC teams at home.
Clemson will next play a 3-4 Florida State program coming off a bye. That game might pose a challenge for the Tigers. While FSU has its issues and head coach Mike Norvell is on the hot seat, the Noles were a couple of bad calls away from tying up a double-overtime contest with Miami.
The 3-4 contest with FSU is now Clemson's Super Bowl. One could only imagine the type of postgame news conference Swinney would have to give if the Tigers fall to Florida State in Tallahassee.
Maybe the loss against Virginia Tech on Saturday night will provoke Swinney to make much-needed changes to the program in the offseason.
