The Clemson Tigers are about to face quite a fight against the North Carolina Tar Heels.
This may sound wild to say, but through the first two games of the 2026 college football season, the North Carolina Tar Heels look like a better team than the Clemson Tigers.
And right now, it doesn't even appear that close.
While Clemson was busy getting railroaded by LSU, 51-10, in its season opener and then barely beating Georgia Southern in Week 2, North Carolina topped TCU with an incredible defensive effort on Aug. 29 before throttling East Tennessee State last Saturday.
Were either of the Tar Heels' opponents elite? No, but TCU is not a bad football team, and is East Tennessee State any worse than Georgia Southern?
The fact is that North Carolina took care of business on both occasions and has allowed a grand total of 13 points thus far this season.
UNC suddenly boasts a very impressive pass rush led by Melkart Abou-Jaoude (who was a quiet breakout star last year), Xavier Lewis and Jaylen Hardy. Its offense looks very different with Billy Edwards Jr. under center. Its backfield features numerous capable running backs. Its aerial weapons are much improved.
And of course, while Bill Belichick was a punchline last season, he is still Bill Belichick, and it's entirely possible he is starting to get comfortable in Chapel Hill ... even with all of the turmoil around him.
Clemson? It is neither here nor there.
The Tigers were lifeless against LSU. They put forth a pedestrian performance versus Georgia Southern. They have already switched quarterbacks before Week 3.
Yes, Clemson is home, and it is favored to beat North Carolina on Saturday. But what reason have the Tigers given us to believe that they will win this game?
Because thus far, the Tar Heels have absolutely been the superior ballclub, and they already look far more confident than they did at any point in 2025.
Meanwhile, Clemson's energy was so low before Week 2 that offensive coordinator Chad Morris had to give the team a pep talk.
Maybe the Tigers will put together their best showing of the season in their first ACC matchup this weekend, and maybe that will quell some of the Dabo Swinney hot seat talk.
But there is no doubt that Clemson fans should be very worried about this contest, because this is absolutely not the same Tigers team of old ... nor is this the same UNC squad from last year.
