The Clemson Tigers are exploring legal action against an award-winning defender who just backed out of a deal.

Earlier in the month, the Clemson Tigers struck a big blow in the transfer portal, landing former California Golden Bears linebacker Luke Ferrelli.

With edge rusher T.J. Parker and linebacker Wade Woodaz heading into the NFL Draft, Ferrelli — who won the ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year award in 2025 — was expected to help fortify Clemson's front seven.

But just before the portal window closed, Ferrelli re-entered and is apparently being courted by the Ole Miss Rebels. After he had already signed with the Tigers.

Some form of tampering may have occurred here, and now, Clemson is exploring legal action as a result, via Jason Priester of The Clemson Insider.

"In the case of Ferrelli, we’re not talking about one program just attempting to flip a player committed to another program. Ferrilli was signed," Priester wrote. "He was enrolled, attending classes and already taking part in team activities. Oh, and he was not even in the portal when Ole Miss began the poaching process."

Tigers head coach Dabo Swinney had scarcely used the transfer portal before 2026, previously noting that "tampering" was the problem; not the portal itself.

Between 2022 and 2025, Clemson landed a grand total of five transfers. It bagged 10 — including Ferrelli — this year.

But Ferrelli's decision to potentially bolt the Tigers (he has removed anything Clemson-related from his social media, if that's any indication) is certainly a crushing blow.

That's especially considering the transfer portal window is now closed, and while the Tigers can still add pieces, most of the top players have already found new homes.

Ferrelli racked up 91 tackles, five tackles for loss, a sack and an interception at California this past season. The former three-star prospect was the 61st-ranked linebacker in the portal, per 247 Sports, which feels pretty low given his production.

We'll see if Clemson is able to keep Ferrelli aboard much like the Washington Huskies were able to retain quarterback Demond Williams after threatening legal action.

As of right now, the Tigers have yet to bring anything to the table, but something could be on its way.
