The Clemson Tigers have a budding superstar on their roster.
The Clemson Tigers entered the 2026 college football season with some very obvious NFL talent on their roster, but perhaps none have been as impressive as cornerback Ashton Hampton thus far.
Hampton was generally viewed as a potential first-round pick going into the campaign, but many also had him tabbed as a Day 2 pick.
At this point, I'm not sure how anyone can genuinely say that Hampton is not a first-rounder.
Through the first four games of the year, Hampton has registered 10 tackles, an interception and seven passes defended, the latter of which leads the country.
He was thoroughly dominant against a tough California passing attack on Friday night, logging three passes defended on the evening.
Head coach Dabo Swinney specifically singled out Hampton after the game, but Swinney surely wasn't surprised.
People should have seen this coming.
Last year, Hampton was in the shadow of Avieon Terrell, who ended up getting selected by the Atlanta Falcons in the second round of the NFL Draft last April.
But while Terrell got most of the attention in 2025 because he was draft eligible, it was Hampton who may have actually been Clemson's best cornerback.
In 13 games last year, Hampton recorded 45 tackles, three tackles for loss, a sack, an interception and nine passes defended. That followed an impressive freshman season in which he tallied 27 tackles, a couple of picks (including a pick-six) and five passes defended.
Hampton stands 6-foot-2 or 6-foot-3, depending on who you ask. He weighs in at 205 pounds, and he uses his size to his advantage.
The Tallahassee native is a very physical corner and a terrific tackler, so he excels both in coverage and while defending the run.
He is also incredibly smooth in the secondary and has a very good feel for the ball. He doesn't get juked easily, and it seems pretty clear that he has the potential to develop into a lockdown cornerback on the professional level.
Hampton will be part of a loaded 2027 cornerback class that also includes names like Leonard Moore, Ellis Robinson IV, Zabien Brown and Kelley Jones, but Hampton is right up there with the best of them.
Assuming Hampton continues on his current trajectory, he should absolutely hear his named called on Day 1 of the draft next spring.
He also could be the next superstar to come out of Clemson. He's that good.
