A highly anticipated Clemson defensive tackle's promising debut ends prematurely with a devastating ACL tear, sidelining him for much of the season.
The Clemson Tigers hit the transfer portal hard this offseason.
After a 7-6 record in 2025, head coach Dabo Swinney knew he needed to make some big changes to help the program be more competitive in the current college football landscape.
He had been reluctant in the past to rely on the transfer portal, opting to favor high school recruits.
While Swinney is still emphasizing the high school pipeline, Clemson added several key transfer players in the portal.
One of those key transfers was defensive tackle Kourtney Kelly, coming from West Georgia.
Kelly reportedly suffered an injury early in spring training, but it was unclear how serious the injury was.
Per Griffin Barfield of Sports Illustrated, Clemson disclosed that Kelly tore his ACL and could miss much of the upcoming season during Monday's practice.
"Before the practice period, a representative from Clemson Athletics said that West Georgia defensive tackle Kourtney Kelly tore his ACL in practice a few weeks ago," Barfield wrote.
"He received surgery on his right knee last Thursday, being seen in a yellow jersey with a crutch in Monday’s practice... it looks like he could be sidelined for a majority of this upcoming 2026 season."
Before the injury, Swinney had high hopes for the six-foot-three, 280-pound defensive tackle.
“He is a young player, he has three years left,” Swinney said of Kelly, via The Clemson Insider. “He is a guy that has flashed a lot this spring.”
Clemson added nine total transfers to the defense, hoping to boost the unit for a pivotal 2026 campaign. The Tigers watched as Miami loaded its roster with defensive talent and made it to the College Football Playoff national championship.
It's possible that Kelly could return to the field to play for the Tigers at some point during the 2026 season, but that would likely come closer to the postseason than in Week 1.
Without Kelly, the Tigers have Vic Burley, Champ Thompson, Hevin Brown-Shuler, Amare Adams and Markus Strong competing for playing time at defensive tackle this spring.
Any Burburija, a JUCO transfer, is expected to join the team in the summer.
