Do the Clemson Tigers have a quarterback controversy brewing?
At the moment, Christopher Vizzina is expected to be the Clemson Tigers' starting quarterback heading into 2026, and barring a disastrous showing in fall camp, he will almost surely open up the season under center.
But just how long of a leash will Vizzina have?
Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney has expressed faith in Vizzina, but he has also made it no secret that he loves freshman signal-caller Tait Reynolds.
Reynolds surpassed Chris Denson on the depth chart in spring practice, and some feel that the first-year quarterback could actually threaten Vizzina this season.
Swinney has raved about Reynolds all offseason, and he took the opportunity to do it again very recently.
“I mean, he’s an amazing athlete. Y’all will see him," Swinney said, via The Clemson Insider. "He doesn’t look like a freshman, and he’s got elite arm talent.”
Swinney didn't necessarily mean that we will "see him" during the regular season; he was just saying we will get a good look at Reynolds in camp.

“His whole family are football players. He’s been a baseball-football guy forever,” Swinney said of the dual athlete. “He pulled his hamstring his senior year, but this guy’s an elite athlete. Dad was a linebacker, brother’s a linebacker."
Reynolds is a three-star prospect who signed with Clemson back in December. So did fellow freshman quarterback Brock Bradley, but clearly, Bradley did not make nearly the impression on Swinney that Reynolds did.
Vizzina has made one start thus far in his career, which came last season against SMU. He arrived at Clemson as a four-star talent back in 2023 and was seen as the successor to Cade Klubnik, but his job may not be entirely safe.
There has been rampant speculation that Swinney could have a quick hook with Vizzina early on in the season, so there is considerable pressure on the redshirt junior as he prepares for Week 1 against LSU.
Is there a chance Vizzina loses out to Reynolds in camp? Probably not, but there is no question that he should watch his back for the rest of the summer.
