Despite two national titles, Swinney’s resistance to the transfer portal era and a lackluster 7-6 season spark debate over whether he still deserves his elite conference status.
There is no doubt that two-time national champion Clemson Tigers head coach Dabo Swinney is an elite coach in college football.
Whether the Tigers are stagnant with Swinney at the helm is another question entirely. Certainly after a 7-6 record with a roster that sent nine players in the first five rounds of the 2026 NFL Draft, there are valid questions about the direction of the program.
Swinney can answer those questions during the upcoming season, albeit with a less talented team than he had last year.
Clemson went 4-4 in the ACC last season, like they did in 2023. The Tigers won the ACC championship in between those two lackluster seasons in 2024.
The Tigers’ dominance in the ACC is no more, though the team still appears to be near the top of the conference, looking up at Miami.
Steve Lassan of Athlon Sports ranked Swinney as the No. 2 best coach in the ACC. He's giving him that ranking based off his success when NIL and the transfer portal didn't dominate the sport.
"Swinney is still among college football’s top coaches with a 187-53 overall record with the Tigers," Lassan wrote. "However, the program has slipped just a bit and is coming off a disappointing 7-6 season after seemingly having the pieces in place for another deep run in the playoffs.
"After recording six consecutive top-five finishes from 2015-20, Clemson has not finished higher than No. 13 in the final rankings over the last five years. Swinney is one of four active coaches with a national championship ring, winning two (2016 and ‘18) with the Tigers."
It's hard to properly evaluate Swinney, because the game has evolved so much since he was winning championships nearly a decade ago.
What is a good coach in college? Someone who can recruit, develop, and strategize during a game.
In the new era, there is a clear disconnect for Swinney, and he even admitted it's hard for Clemson to recruit elite players like Notre Dame and other Blue Blood programs.
Given the fact that he and his staff completed a failed talented roster last season, there should be questions about the acumen of its leaders.
No. 2 feels a bit high for Swinney given the current circumstances.
