Will the Clemson Tigers actually pursue a quarterback via the transfer portal?
The Clemson Tigers are in a very difficult position as far as their quarterback situation is concerned.
Following Cade Klubnik's departure after last season, Clemson was searching for an answer under center. It decided to hand the reins to Christopher Vizzina, who lasted all of two games before losing his job to freshman Tait Reynolds.
Vizzina did suffer an elbow injury in Week 2, but Dabo Swinney made it clear that his decision at quarterback didn't have to do with Vizzina's health.
Reynolds hasn't fared much better than Vizzina, as he has thrown just one touchdown and three interceptions in six games and four starts.
With Vizzina likely transferring out of the program after the season and Trent Pearman running out of eligibility, Brock Bradley and incoming freshman Kharim Hughley will be the only other signal-callers on the roster in 2027.
There won't be any real competition for Reynolds, who is loved by Swinney, but clearly has a whole of work to do to be serviceable.
Remember: last winter, many wondered if Swinney would find another quarterback in the transfer portal. He didn't do it. Fans and pundits will now be mulling over the idea of Swinney attacking the portal once again this offseason ... except they are likely going to be disappointed.
Swinney's recent transfer portal comments confirmed what most of us already knew about the two-time national champion coach: he doesn't like adding external pieces.
While speaking to the media this week, Swinney said that Clemson will always be a program that develops its own players, meaning that the chances of the Tigers going out and getting a quarterback this winter are slim to none.
Perhaps Swinney will land a depth addition just to provide some insurance, but it doesn't appear he is all that interested in adding some competition for Reynolds.
Clemson has played two ranked teams this season: LSU and Miami. Both squads had transfer quarterbacks.
It's the modern way, and the Tigers haven't adapted. Nor will they so long as Swinney is at the helm.
That would be fine if Clemson had a legitimate solution, but Reynolds does not look like an answer thus far. He is a former three-star prospect, so it's not like he was ever highly touted. And now, we are seeing why.
There is certainly still hope for Reynolds to eventually improve, but what if he doesn't? What will the Tigers do at quarterback?
One thing is for sure: they won't be getting one via the transfer portal.
