Where do the Clemson Tigers stand in the ACC heading into the bye?

The Clemson Tigers had a chance to make a major statement against the Miami Hurricanes last Saturday. Instead, they allowed Miami to further bolster its national title chances with a resounding 41-13 win at Memorial Stadium.

Clemson is now just 3-2 on the season heading into its bye week, with both of its losses coming at the hands of ranked opponents.

The Tigers currently find themselves in sixth place in the ACC, with Miami, Pittsburgh, Duke, SMU and Wake Forest (of all teams) ahead of them.

It's clear that the Hurricanes are far superior. Pittsburgh has been a big surprise and has jumped into the top 25. Duke has recovered very admirably after the loss of Darian Mensah. SMU was expected to be good.

Wake Forest? I have my doubts, but the Demon Deacons did beat Louisville in Week 4, and it annihilated Stanford by a score of 57-3 this past weekend. So maybe they are for real?

I never would have expected Wake Forest to potentially be better than Clemson this season, but here we are.

So where do the Tigers actually rank in the conference?

Miami and SMU are clearly better. Pittsburgh is 5-0, so the Panthers also qualify. I'm not entirely on Duke or Wake Forest, but the latter does have a pretty explosive offense. Then you have teams like Louisville, Virginia and Virginia Tech who are solid.

Perhaps I'm being generous, but I'm going to go ahead and say Clemson is a top-five team in the ACC at the moment. Do I feel good about that? No, but most of the other clubs haven't really beat any truly impressive teams. Not that the Tigers really have, either, but I feel more inclined to trust Dabo Swinney, even though that's taboo now.

The crazy thing is that we are even having this discussion.

How did we get to the point where Clemson is now trying to fight off programs like Wake Forest and Virginia Tech? It's absolutely wild.

The Tigers will face Charleston Southern coming out of the bye week on Oct. 17. They will then return to ACC play against Virginia Tech on Oct. 24.

Clemson does not have a single ranked opponent remaining on its schedule. Five years ago, that would have meant game over and an extended winning streak for the Tigers. But in 2026, that might not even mean eight wins.

We'll see where Clemson ends up come season's end.
