Aggies tumble, Alabama surges, and conference championship chaos reshapes playoff picture. Unpredictable rankings leave spots open for unlikely contenders.

After not much shakeup at the top of last week’s rankings, the Texas A&M Aggies’ loss to the Texas Longhorns opened up a spot in the top 4 of the Week 14 College Football Playoff rankings. They slid to No. 7 and are out of contention for the SEC championship game, and no longer will enjoy a first-round bye in the projected seedings.

That sets up a rematch between the Georgia Bulldogs and Alabama Crimson Tide for the conference title -- but there's less concern of Alabama possibly being left out of the bracket with a loss after they jumped to No. 9 in the rankings after beating Auburn.

Things got extremely messy with the Duke Blue Devils making the ACC title game. It opened the door for potential chaos for a Group of Five champion to possible jump the Blue Devils, with the Tulane Green Wave no longer the only G5 team in the rankings.

Then there’s the case of the Ole Miss Rebels sans-Lane Kiffin. Kiffin sent playcaller Charlie Weis back to Oxford to call the game for Ole Miss, and did so hoping the CFP committee wouldn’t ding his old team as a result. The new LSU Tigers coach was correct, with them moving up in the rankings, and they're safely in the field.

With only conference championship games left to decide seeding in the bracket, here is a complete look at the penultimate Week 14 College Football Playoff rankings.

    Week 14 CFP Rankings

    1. 1. Ohio State Buckeyes (12-0, 9-0 in Big Ten)
    2. 2. Indiana Hoosiers (12-0, 9-0 in Big Ten)
    3. 3. Georgia Bulldogs (11-1, 7-1 in SEC)
    4. 4. Texas Tech Red Raiders (11-1, 8-1 in Big 12)
    5. 5. Oregon Ducks (11-1, 8-1 in Big Ten)
    6. 6. Ole Miss Rebels (11-1, 7-1 in SEC)
    7. 7. Texas A&M Aggies (11-1, 7-1 in SEC)
    8. 8. Oklahoma Sooners (10-2, 6-2 in SEC)
    9. 9. Alabama Crimson Tide (10-2, 7-1 in SEC)
    10. 10. Notre Dame Fighting Irish (10-2)
    11. 11. BYU Cougars (11-1, 8-1 in Big 12)
    12. 12. Miami Hurricanes (Fla.) (10-2, 6-2 in ACC)
    13. 13. Texas Longhorns (9-3, 6-2 in SEC)
    14. 14. Vanderbilt Commodores (9-2, 5-2 in SEC)
    15. 15. Utah Utes (10-2, 7-2 in Big 12)
    16. 16. USC Trojans (9-3, 7-2 in Big Ten)
    17. 17. Virginia Cavaliers (10-2, 7-1 in ACC)
    18. 18. Arizona Wildcats (9-3, 6-3 in Big 12)
    19. 19. Michigan Wolverines (9-3, 7-2 in Big Ten)
    20. 20. Tulane Green Wave (10-2, 7-1 in American)
    21. 21. Houston Cougars (9-3, 6-3 in Big 12)
    22. 22. Georgia Tech Yellowjackets (9-3, 6-2 in ACC)
    23. 23. Iowa Hawkeyes (8-4, 6-3 in Big Ten)
    24. 24. North Texas Mean Green (11-1, 7-1 in American)
    25. 25. James Madison Dukes (11-1, 8-0 in Sun Belt)

The top five conference champions are guaranteed a spot in the playoff. That was all but assuredly to include the ACC champion and American champion until Duke got into the conference championship. Now, there's a world where the No. 20 Green Wave could become the No. 11 seed. Even more interesting, the Dukes and Mean Green found their way in. It's clear that the American champion will be in the College Football Playoff. But they might not be the last seed.

Based on the current rankings, now the No. 11 and No. 12 spots are up for grabs with the committee not projecting teams. The chaos of Duke’s inclusion makes it possible that the American champ could trump the Blue Devils.

If the College Football Playoff started today, here’s a look at the projected matchups in the 12-team format.
