Deion Sanders faces a depth crisis in Stillwater as nine Buffaloes hit the injury report, leaving Isaac Wilson without key targets and the defense missing vital playmakers.
The Colorado Buffaloes continue to deal with injuries as they prepare for their Week 8 matchup against the Oklahoma State Cowboys.
Deion Sanders' team kept it interesting last week against the No. 11 Utah Utes, but they were still handed it under loss in Big 12 Conference play. This came right after a Week 6 bye to recover and regroup. But Colorado will remain shorthanded against the Pokes in Stillwater. The latest injury report suggests the team could face another challenging week.
The Buffs' initial Week 8 injury report features seven players listed as out and two questionable. With several key players sidelined, Colorado will need others to step up as the season progresses. One of the biggest ones who hasn't played much this season is wide receiver Danny Scudero. After leading the nation in receiving yards in 2025, the injured playmaker could be used now more than ever. He's joined by fellow receiver Cam Perry and running back Micah Welch.
With the trio now out, Colorado will make adjustments to their lineup. Sanders addressed Welch's condition during his Tuesday press conference, admitting that the situation remains uncertain.
"He's hurting," Sanders said. "He didn't practice today. I have no idea [if it's long-term)]." Sanders added that Welch may have suffered a fracture, but was uncertain. Now that he's out, the situation is obviously troubling. As for Perry and Scudero, not having two targets for Isaac Wilson will be a huge hit to the Buffs' depth.
Scudero's situation appears to be lingering week after week. He was seen wearing a boot and using crutches during the Utah game. Even if he was to return this season, there's no plausible way that would happen in a matter of weeks with Scudero's obvious condition. The remaining players ruled out are offensive lineman Jayven Richardson, defensive back Braylon Edwards, tight end Zach Atkins and defensive end Sam Gadie.
Lamont Lester Jr. is listed as questionable alongside defensive back Preston Ashley. Both players have been key to Colorado's defense. Sanders acknowledged that Lester needs proper treatment and sufficient recovery time before returning to his usual level of performance. He has nine tackles and four sacks this year.
The growing injury list presents a significant challenge for Sanders and his staff. Colorado must play mistake-free if they want to keep their postseason hopes alive. There could be a huge issue with depth from this point forward.
Colorado travels to Oklahoma State on Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled at 7 p.m. ET on FS1.
