The Hall of Famer has traded pro scouting for college loyalty, distancing himself from his former teams to focus exclusively on his son and Colorado’s high-stakes season.
Deion Sanders has flipped the script when it comes to keeping up with the NFL.
After spending most of his life being involved with the game at the pro level, the Hall of Famer and Colorado Buffaloes coach has scaled back. Sanders was recently asked about keeping up with the Dallas Cowboys and the answer about his former team was very interesting.
"First of all, I love Jerry Jones. I mean, he's the man, I don't follow pro football," Sanders told Covers.com "I do follow the Browns, because my son plays, but I don't. I'm so wrapped up into what I'm trying to accomplish with Colorado. I don't have time to follow the pros and make sure we're on top of our game, and make sure my son is doing his thing. I don't follow the Cowboys. I'm sorry."
Sanders spent over a decade after his playing career as a reporter with the NFL Network. Needless to say, the days of trying to be in step with the newer generation are over for "Prime Time." He's still active on current events. But when it comes to the minor day-to-day happenings with the franchise, Sanders is out. Mostly due to digging in on everything in Boulder and there are no ties to him in Dallas except for the relationship with the front office.
There was a moment before the 2025 NFL Draft when Sanders reportedly had interest in coaching the Cowboys. While there was nothing but speculation surrounding the rumors, he did have an initial conversation with Jones about the position. However, the truth is Sanders has zero interest in coaching any NFL team. He enjoys being a mentor and guiding players to the next level and that's as far as it goes.
As for Shedeur Sanders, his quarterback battle with Cleveland is expected to be one of the biggest storylines during this offseason. Deshaun Watson is coming back from injury and will give the soon-to-be second-year star a run for his money with the starting job on the line. The Browns are coming off a 5-12 season and need a boost.
Deion Sanders understands the need for a supporting cast, especially in his son's position. "A quarterback needs help tremendously from the offensive line, from the receivers, from the running game, from the coordinators as well," Sanders said. “It's not just a singular thing, like a defensive back. I don't care what the pass rush is, (the DB) has got to do his job. It's a little different with a quarterback. He needs several things to go right for him to be successful."
Coach Prime will have a hard time keeping up with Shedeur this year as the Buffs hit a critical point in his tenure. After a 3-9 season with a single win in Big 12 play, the room for error is none with Julian Lewis now under center. Anything .500 or above will be a significant improvement from last year. Colorado hasn't won a bowl game since in 22 years and is riding a five-game postseason winless streak. Sanders hopes to change that during his time in Boulder.
