Coach Prime praises his squad’s resilience and a revitalized ground game after a gritty overtime victory, keeping Colorado’s postseason hopes alive as they snap a Big 12 drought.
For the first time in five games, the Colorado Buffaloes football team celebrated a win. This was also the first Big 12 conference win in over a year.
Deion Sanders stepped up to the podium after the win to discuss his takeaways after beating Kansas State in overtime.
Colorado (3-5, 1-4 Big 12) is no longer without a in Big 12 play. But they'll need to win three of the last four games for an opportunity to make a postseason run. Here are the highlights of what Coach Prime said after CU's 27-24 win over K-State.
Colorado got the win and it mattered
"Winning is winning," Sanders said. "That's what the goal is. That's what we wanted to do. You've got to understand, we don't subscribe to your channels and your stations and what you all think, like you're preaching the gospel. Our kids ain't built like that. They're locked in and they're focused. They're on a mission to win."
We're talking about overtime, and how the Buffs slipped up
"I saw 10 guys playing their butts off, and one guy that didn't happen on that particular play," Sanders said. "But it wasn't for lack of effort. And we talk every darn day about flushing the last play, the last situation. We talk about scripture. In this world, you're gonna to have tribulations. They should know that by heart. So you're gonna have trials and tests regardless of whatever happens in life. You've just got to 'okay, let's go. Next play. Let's go.' And that's what they showed."
Colorado did the darn thing on the ground
"The running attack was truly vital," Sanders said. "I liked that because it took a lot of pressure off Isaac (Wilson). He didn't have to play hero ball. He was able to be calm and focused and made some great throws, especially the last one. So I'm happy that we focused and locked in on the running game."
"Richard (Young) is consistent with the way he practices. He's consistent with the way he goes about the game. The things you guys don't see that I want to point out: When JaQuail (Smith) scored his long touchdown. He broke for how long? Forty-seven. Guess who was the first one downfield? Guess who was the first one running to congratulate him? That's the kind of young man he is."
Isaac Wilson gets his first CU win as starter
"I'm tremendously proud of Isaac," Sanders noted. (He) is a phenomenal young man, especially to his teammates. They believe in him, man. They believe in him because of how he prepares, how he practices, how he plays. For a period of time, he didn't have the hiccup that you've seen in the past. And we've been trying to coach him out of that. And he did wonderfully."
Where does Colorado go from here?
"I don't know what the definition of desperation is. I don't think these young men are desperate," Sanders said. "Are y'all desperate? We're not. It ain't no desperation. It may be to you, but it's not desperation to them."
Colorado's task will be taking one week at a time. The Buffs head to the desert of Tempe to face the Arizona State Sun Devils. Kickoff will be at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN2.
