Nike ignored a golden chance to align Prime’s signature drops with Colorado’s iconic weekly uniform rotations.
The sneaker giant Nike and Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders have coordinated several Diamond Turf releases since 2023. Almost one pair or colorway per month for four years now. The initial push was like any other Nike retro release. Prioritizing on original previously released colorways.
After the initial push, the sneaker pairing leaned into Colorado Buffaloes' specific releases. Models like the Colorado Road, Colorado Home, Colorado Away and even in inverted version of the OG colorway. All of which corresponded to some versions of the Colorado Buffaloes' primary uniform colors.
Several sneaker media outlets are reporting the official release of the Nike Air Diamond Turf 2 "patent leather." This model will be predominantly black with red, gold and even white “21” accents. Short of the inner sock and the out/midsoles, the entire shoe is patent leather.

A missed opportunity with Colorado promotions
Nike has not hesitated to release an exhaustive number of Diamond Turf colorways, even for this promoter of the signature line. Nike faces several concerns as the sneaker culture is currently all but forcing changes.
The liquidation rates Nike consistently strives for are becoming increasingly difficult. There are several factors, but the frequency of drops, ascending cost and a lack of consumer recovery time are at the forefront. The tertiary market continues to hoard units, inflating the resale market, and the consumer base that built Nike into a juggernaut are simply no longer interested in playing that game. Creating a different way to attract and bring consumers back was advised.
There was an incredible opportunity that could have re-instilled consumer excitement, even in the face of a downturn in Coach Prime and Colorado hype. This idea was hiding in plain sight, and not remotely foreign to Nike in the slightest.
When Sanders arrived in Boulder, one of the many things he suggested was weekly uniform changes or combinations. He even cited the Oregon Ducks as the program that inspired the idea almost 20 years ago.
While Oregon and Nike kept the footwear options for PE’s (player exclusives), they’ve never made Oregon-specific colorways available to the public. However, with Sanders, Nike has made almost every colorway imaginable available. Just marry the two concepts.
Colorado is expected to wear 12 uniform combinations. One for each week of the regular season, which they have done for the last few seasons. White-on-white, white-on-gold, gold-on-gold, grey-on-grey, black-on-black (flatirons or traditional) black-on-mineral gold, the combinations are virtually endless and tailor-made to fit sneaker colorways.
Coach Prime conducts his weekly press conference with the local media on Tuesdays. Games are primarily a Saturday event. Sanders and Nike could have created a schedule of releases. Even if there needed to be a limited allocation volume. Sanders could have ended his Tuesday press conference by announcing this week’s uniform combination and Diamond Turf release colorway for that week.
What Sanders and Nike could've done
Nike would have to coordinate those limited releases and expedite shipping for those limited customers, typically 5,000 pairs or fewer, to ensure delivery by Friday evening. This concept would have done a few things to inspire liquidation and an anticipated release. It would have certainly created reasonable urgency for those specific releases.
- The time-sensitive nature, corresponding to specific games, would have created urgency
- The limited quantities would create liquidation over the span of 12 weeks, not just the first and second release
- Customers could have planned for specific weeks instead of a first come, first served concept. Giving consumers time to recover between drops as it would be game-specific
- The liquidation would be based on the game the colorway corresponds to and not just the most popular by colorway order
- The CU Buffs already check grail level colorway boxes (grey/white, black cat, black/gold, etc...)
- The online purchasing window could be set to begin after the conclusion of the weekly Coach Prime press conference, increasing the volume of eyes on Prime pressers and creating almost a countdown to that week’s release.
This outline concept would’ve also hit the pause button on releasing any and all colorways that are not inherently CU related until the offseason. Limiting the frustration with the established Buffs Nation and others who are not thrilled with seeing red while Coach Sanders conducts the business of Colorado football.
The reported release date of this “patent leather” release will correspond with the Week 9 matchup. When No. 20 Houston plays the Colorado Buffaloes in Boulder. If they executed the above idea, this week's colorway would have been a "cool grey" which would have almost certainly sold out in minutes.
An official announcement and listing (pre-order not available) can be found at Foot Locker.
