A few days ago, the LSU Tigers did not have one quarterback on their roster between graduating players and others transferring. After a whirlwind recruiting battle, new head coach Lane Kiffin landed his signal caller for next season, as former Arizona State Sun Devils quarterback Sam Leavitt committed to the Tigers on Monday morning. He will presumably be the team’s next starter. LSU also signed Elon Phoenix transfer Landen Clark, but that seems to be more of a backup move. The Tigers also were thought to have once blown their chances with the former Sun Devil after making a play for Demond Williams.
When the Washington Huskies starter entered the portal, Leavitt was on his visit in Baton Rouge and at a basketball game with Kiffin alongside some of Leavitt’s now future teammates. There were reports that LSU was the favorite for Williams, and the optics of that coming out mid-visit with Leavitt weren’t great. However, things were clearly salvaged, and the Tigers have potential for an explosive offense with Leavitt.
Here is the full story from Tigers Roundtable writer Dylan Sanders on the massive addition and what Leavitt brings to LSU.
Leavitt completed 60.7 percent of his passes for 1,628 yards with 10 touchdowns to three interceptions before suffering a season-ending foot injury. He didn’t have that great of weapons around him, and that can be expected to change in Baton Rouge as Kiffin continues to load up in the portal for his first season with the Tigers. However, the quarterback position is paramount, and that role is off to a good start.
